Position: Assistant Professor of Practice in Counselor Education

Stetson University seeks individuals with expertise in counselor education for two (2) twelve-month, full-time, non-tenure-track Assistant Professor of Practice appointments beginning August 2023.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from a CACREP-accredited institution or have a related doctoral degree and have been employed as a full-time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013.  Experience in teaching and mentoring Master’s level students is required, and preference will also be given to candidates with experience supervising practicum and internship students. Individuals should demonstrate the potential for excellence in teaching, the ability to work collaboratively with others, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Qualified applicants should have an interest in contributing to the department’s commitment to increasing the quality of education for all students, including those from underrepresented groups. Applicants must be licensed or license-eligible in mental health counseling (LMHC) and/or marriage and family therapy (LMFT) in the state of Florida. We are especially interested in candidates with either play therapy or marriage and family therapy credentials.

Responsibilities:

Stetson’s Counselor Education department focuses on education of the whole student through a strong foundation in the core CACREP content areas, experiential learning, and professional mentoring relationships with faculty. Thus, this professor of practice position has a strong focus on teaching and mentoring graduate students from a broad cross section of diverse backgrounds. Responsibilities center on teaching a variety of courses within our two CACREP-accredited programs in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling, and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. The annual teaching load includes three (3) courses in the fall semester, three (3) courses in the spring semester, and two (2) courses in the summer semester, as well as the possibility of teaching a fourth course in the fall and/or in the spring for additional compensation (contracted separately).  Responsibilities also include advising graduate counseling students in their program of study and serving on department committees.

The Department:

The graduate Department of Counselor Education (www.stetson.edu/counselor) consists of six full-time faculty members and is dedicated to preparing counselor education students to be ethically informed; developing a keen awareness of their personal strengths and resiliency; further developing an appreciation for cultural diversity, critical thinking, and creative expression; and having a deep commitment to the counseling profession and community as a whole. Our commitment is to produce stellar graduates whose work centers on helping individuals, couples, and families in a diverse world. Our faculty are engaged in initiatives that include externally funded grant activities (HRSA and The John Templeton Foundation), leadership within the American Counseling Association, collaborative work across departments within the University to enhance the health and wellbeing of our community, and local and international work centered on the development of culturally sensitive programs and interventions for vulnerable populations. These initiatives create unique and exciting opportunities for our students and for the individual who will be joining our team.

The College of Arts and Sciences:

Stetson’s College of Arts and Sciences (www.stetson.edu/portal/artsci/) is the largest and most diverse of the University’s colleges and schools; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts.  With nineteen academic departments and nine interdisciplinary programs, the College is the liberal arts core of the University.  A great strength of the College is its faculty of approximately 140 full-time teacher-scholars.  The College offers 31 undergraduate majors and 34 undergraduate minors; six graduate degrees are offered in Education, Counselor Education, and Creative Writing.  Every undergraduate major requires a senior research project, giving students the opportunity to design and carry out independent research under faculty mentorship.  Our academic programs are shaped by the values of social justice and civic responsibility.  All of our courses and programs of study promote engaged learning, whereby students create connections between the classroom or lab and the local, regional, and global community. The academic programs of the College of Arts and Sciences prepare students to live significant lives, to interact with and positively affect the world around them.

The University:

Founded in 1883, Stetson University (www.stetson.edu) is a private, selective university comprised of a rich array of liberal arts and professional academic programs. Collectively, Stetson’s faculty works with nearly 4,000 students in undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The University’s historic main campus, located in DeLand, enrolls nearly 2,600 students in undergraduate programs in the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Business Administration, and the School of Music. Stetson University College of Law, Florida’s first law school, moved from the main campus to Gulfport in 1945, and, with the addition of the Tampa Law Center, serves approximately 1,000 students working full-time or part-time toward J.D. or LL.M. degrees. The University’s graduate programs include Business, Accounting, Educational Leadership, Counselor Education, and Creative Writing. Florida’s oldest private institution of higher learning, Stetson has regularly been ranked among the best regional universities in the Southeast and was the first private college in Florida to be granted a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

Stetson University provides an inspiring education that engages students with rigorous academic and creative study grounded in liberal learning and promotes civic values of personal and social responsibility. Working closely with faculty and with one another, students cultivate abilities to explore issues deeply, think critically, reason empirically, speak persuasively, and connect ideas creatively. Firmly committed to inclusive excellence, our vibrant community of teacher-scholars nurtures the potential of individual students to lead lives of significance and prepares each to meet the challenges of shaping the future—locally, nationally, and globally.

The Community:

DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 32,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando. The area offers extensive cultural as well as recreational activities.
