Job Summary

The Librarian, Reference & Instruction guides a diverse community of students, faculty, and staff to access information with critical insight via individual reference assistance, group instruction and guides (print and online). The position also collaborates with librarians and staff to provide user-centered services and spaces for learning and research, with primary focus on the Delaware Campus and Regional Learning Centers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Customer Service & Program Support
  • Provides reference assistance and support to students, faculty and staff.
  • Answers reference questions using a variety of print and electronic resources.
  • Provides advice and support to students including interpreting usefulness of reference materials for student projects,
  • advises students on selection and focus of topics for research papers, and guides students in development of effective search strategies.
  • Advises students on citation methods, copyright issues, and provides other support, as needed, to promote learning and research success.
  • Promotes library services at Delaware campus and Regional Learning Center events, such as Delaware Day, and through written articles in campus media.
  • Participates in library outreach. Provides input, as necessary, into development of reference guidelines and procedures.
Instructional & Faculty Support
  • Provides individual instruction to users with varying skill levels, in the research process and in effective use of electronic and print resources and databases.
  • Teaches skills needed to identify, locate, access, and evaluate information and resources, and develop information literacy knowledge to navigate and locate varying types and formats of information sources.
  • Develops instructional modules for general- and course-specific library research.
  • Initiates, plans and develops tutorials and supporting instructional materials for specific databases or research needs and specific user groups. Collaborates with faculty in development of instructions. sessions tailored to the curriculum, class assignments and student readiness.
  • Responds to faculty requests for development of effective library research assignments.
  • Provides library instruction at campuses, Regional Learning Centers, and off-campus sites.
  • Researches, evaluates, and selects library materials to assist in maintenance and upgrading of print and electronic reference and circulating collections
Technology Support & Data Analytics
  • Contributes to the development of the library website and may be responsible for a significant portion of webpages, online research guides, and other library publications.
  • Records statistics for reference and instruction sessions. Participates in library assessment activities.
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
  • Fosters and maintains a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.
Additional Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Works with Delaware Library Coordinator for scheduled shifts at Regional Learning Centers.
  • Communicates any concerns related to building operations to appropriate contacts.
  • Monitors computer equipment used to access library information. Contacts IT support if service is needed for non-functional equipment.
  • Attends all required department meetings and assigned training sessions at the Delaware campus, Regional Learning Centers, and the Columbus Campus. This may require weekly travel to alternate sites.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee frequently sits for periods of time, stands, and walks. Employee converses verbally or manually with others in person as well as by telephone. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on computer screen. Employee occasionally lifts up to 10 pounds.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Master’s Degree from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Three (3) years progressively responsible experience working in a library reference position or a related field.
*An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
