Department Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) offers the core liberal arts and sciences curriculum that serves the entire UO undergraduate population. As of 2022, the majority of undergraduates (more than 60 percent, or almost 11,000 students at any given time) go on to pursue a degree in one of the college's 55+ undergraduate degree programs. CAS also serves the majority of UO's graduate students, with numerous master's programs and 40+ doctoral programs that produce approximately 75 percent of the university's PhDs. CAS is also home to approximately 750 faculty, 1,000+ graduate employees, and 200 administrative employees.

Position Summary

The Social Media Coordinator plays a key role in the advancement and execution of the communications and marketing for CAS to reach key stakeholders, including undergraduate and graduate students, parents and families, alumni, donors, and community members. The Social Media Coordinator reports to the Senior Director of Communications and serves as the primary project manager, strategist, and content producer for CAS social media channels, including but not limited to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.

The Social Media Coordinator will collaborate with the CAS Communication team, CAS faculty and department heads, and the CAS Dean's Office to lead social media initiatives and support ongoing communication work in compliance with brand standards and social media guidelines and protocols established by University Communications. This includes serving as the point person for CAS social media channels, managing creative projects, writing copy, creating visual and video content, and contributing to strategic planning. The Coordinator will also cultivate a social media network in partnership with University Communications across CAS departments, serving as an advisor to those whose role includes managing social media accounts within departments and institutes. The position also will share training opportunities provided by University Communications and other university offices for CAS faculty and staff who manage social media accounts, manage all analytics for CAS social media accounts and manage an integrated social media/communications calendar.

This position requires proactive communication skills, creative content production skills, the ability to make independent decisions, a commitment to upholding and promoting DEI principles, as well as ongoing collaboration with team members to align social media and other communication strategies with the University of Oregon brand.

This position supervises 1-2 student interns.

Minimum Requirements

Three years of experience as a public relations representative for an organization that involved gathering information, writing and/or producing materials, presenting information to the public, handling public relations, preparing press releases, and interaction with the news media. At least one year of this experience must have involved participating in planning and administering an organization's public relations program.

A bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a closely related field may substitute for up to two years of the general experience but will not substitute for the one year of specialized experience.

Professional Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to manage social media content and accounts to meet business or institutional goals, including strategy, logistics, and content production.
  • Demonstrated ability to boost social media followers across platforms.
  • Excellent judgment with regard to potential reputation risk issues and reputation management, including striking the right tone on social posts representing CAS and CAS departments.
  • Experience using content creation tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and social media management applications such as Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Falcon.io, or similar systems.
  • Ability to track, analyze, and report on social media metrics.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to collaborate and coordinate as part of a larger team.
  • Ability to handle ambiguity, shift gears comfortably when situations change, prioritize work, and manage multiple deadlines effectively and independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, and ability to communicate and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Strong understanding of ADA compliance best practices for social media.
  • Understanding of sponsored/boosted content, digital advertisements, and social media advertising campaigns.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of experience planning, administering, or managing an organization's social media program.
  • Experience with vertical video production for social media platforms such as Instagram and/or TikTok.
  • Experience producing social media graphics within a brand.
  • Project management experience, preferably using a program such as Asana, Trello, Basecamp, Wrike, or similar.
  • Experience managing or advising other employees or interns.
