Position Focus:
Sponsored funding opportunities for which Yale University may put forward a limited number of proposals or applicants and large, interdisciplinary, grant proposals are a special component of our research mission. As Yale advances the initiatives outlined as part of the University Science Strategy we seek to enhance and strengthen our competitiveness across both limited and other special funding opportunities. The Director, Research Development will: Build and manage a team that will promote and support collaborative research across disciplines, schools, and institutions by assisting project teams with the development of select large-scale or strategically important proposals. Collaborate with School and University leadership to identify and support campus research priority areas. Manage the process of identifying new and recurring limited submissions or special funding opportunities and ensure these opportunities are communicated broadly to the Yale community. Develop and coordinate competitive grants activities, facilitating and building a community of practice that supports research development and provides a wide range of services to faculty in support of successful grant-seeking. Develop strategic relationships with granting agencies and foundations. Introduce and foster relationship building between faculty and grant officers, program managers, and other agency representatives. Develop research development metrics and goals. Working with science leaders across the University, execute and improve upon existing strategies related to selecting our best internal candidates and teams for specific funding opportunities. Build on and enhance a training curriculum to increase strategic proposal development skills for faculty, postdocs, staff and students. Be a key point of contact and communicator related to these unique funding opportunities. Generally, support and enhance our ability to compete in this area.

Essential Duties:
1. Direct and manage the development of new limited and special funding opportunities. 2. Identify new research opportunities and facilitate the identification of potential collaborators, particularly for multi-investigator grants. 3. Develop, implement, and communicate best practices in accordance with federal and state laws, sponsor guidelines, and University policy and procedure. Work effectively across Schools and Departments of the University. 4. Facilitate assembly of large grants, both new and recurring, including scientific editing, compliance reviews, etc. 5. Partner with schools and departments and Administration to oversee large-scale collaborative proposal development. Support the administrative submission and review of proposals involving multiple Yale departments and external organizations. Assist Finance and Administration in ensuring proposals are compliant with all sponsor and University requirements. Provide major input to technical and non-technical sections of the proposal. Coordinate with principals and grantor agencies on all matters concerning the application prior to submission. 6. Identify, and help establish/oversee research alliances to support and to enhance major collaborative science initiatives. 7. Provide expert guidance and expertise on new, large grant initiatives to faculty and staff, acting as point of contact for all questions. 8. Collaborate with project team leaders (faculty) and senior management to plan and direct critical path activities and establish and meet program timelines/goals, facilitating timely and impactful decisions, and contributing to the development of overall project and portfolio strategy. 9. Identify and interact with key internal /external stakeholders to understand issues, requirements, to identify process and system solutions. 10. Strengthen internal/external establishment of sponsor relations through innovative sponsor/investigator/project initiatives leading to higher efficiency, less burdensome processes/procedures and clear deliverables. 11. Work closely with leadership to pursue new federal funding opportunities and oversee stewardship of existing relationships. 12. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
Advanced degree and a minimum of 8 years of university grant administration experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Proven ability to cultivate federal program officer relations to gain perspective on funding priorities and trends. Extensive knowledge of external funding processes, including funding agency guidelines and objectives, grant proposal creation and submission.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Ability to write reports, guidelines and procedures, using extensive software tools. Well-developed interpersonal and liaison and communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with a broad group of stakeholders both internal and external.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Demonstrated effectiveness in coaching and facilitating academic research initiatives from conception to funding and program implementation.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Strong communication, supervisory and management skills. Ability to lead a team of research development professionals. Effective group creation and management.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Proven ability in the evaluation of research data and the preparation and coordination of large grant-funded research. Work independently with limited supervision and tight deadlines.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Ph.D. in scientific or engineering field. Experience managing processes and communication. Working knowledge of communication planning and techniques and educational program design and development. Knowledge of Yale financial and administrative policies & procedures relating to sponsored programs.
