Job Summary/Purpose:

The Adjunct Instructor of Mathematics provides instruction to students in the Mathematics program, directs student discussion and evaluates student performance in the classroom. This is a part-time adjunct instructor position represented by the Faculty Forum and benefit eligible. COCC is hiring for one Adjunct Instructor for the Bend campus and one Adjunct Instructor for the Redmond/Madras/Prineville Campuses.
  • This is a part-time (.50 FTE ) benefited position. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
  • Adjunct Instructor compensation begins at Step 1 / $628 per load unit (LU) subject to change based on current faculty negotiations. Load Unit is not always equivalent to class credit; and shall include both teaching and other assignments.
  • May include travel throughout the College district.
  • Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
  • COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
  • The College is NOT able to support Visa applications for this position. Applicants must already be eligible to work in the United States to be considered for this position.
  • Upon hire, must pass criminal background check and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.
Essential Functions:
  1. Provide instruction in area of discipline, using approved course outcome guides. Teaching assignments may be during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend, and could include classes taught at any of the College campuses, online or remotely.
  2. Hold at least one scheduled office hour per class per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
  3. Utilize College tools and resources, including the Learning Management System and Disability Services software, to support teaching activities as appropriate.
  4. Participate in course assessment.
  5. Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.


MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC :
  1. Teach developmental level and transfer level mathematics courses in both the STEM path and Quantitative Reasoning path.
  2. Employ active learning strategies and creative facilitation of student learning in the classroom.
  3. Work collaboratively with other faculty in the mathematics department to promote student engagement and success, while being focused on solid mathematical pedagogy.

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.   1. Thorough knowledge in the field of taught discipline and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
  2. Ability to adapt and use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques including the use of technology to enhance student success.
  3. Ability to observe, direct, and oversee students ensuring safety in the classroom or laboratory.
  4. Ability to work with and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  5. Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office suite: various course management systems; technology to teach traditional, hybrid, or online courses; and other technology used in the instruction setting.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members.
  7. Ability to provide services to students in a manner which does not discriminate as to race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual preference or marital status.
  8. Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and campus locations, as required.
  9. Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students and the willingness to work as a member of a team with faculty.

Ability to work in classroom, office and/or virtual environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Master’s Degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education from an accredited institution; or a minimum of 30 quarter hours (20 semester hours) of graduate credit in academic courses in the field of mathematics .
  2. One year of successful College teaching experience in the subject area or evidence for the potential for excellence in teaching.


Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Willingness to teach at multiple campus locations.
  2. Experience teaching courses using online homework systems.
  3. Experience teaching courses using Canvas.
