Job Summary:

The Department of Population Health Sciences (PHS) in the University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) invites applications for a faculty position in the area of genetic/genomic epidemiology with a focus on social genomics. This position is the final of three hires in Social Genomics as part of the UW-Madison's interdisciplinary Cluster Hiring Initiative ( https://facstaff.provost.wisc.edu/cluster-hiring-initiative/ ). Faculty in the Social Genomics cluster, along with additional UW-Madison researchers, form the Initiative in Social Genomics (ISG; https://isg.wisc.edu ), one of the largest and most innovative groups of researchers pursuing topics in social genomics in the world. Integrating social and population health sciences with genetic and social policy research, ISG researchers study how genes are linked with human behavior and socio-economic outcomes, how genes and environments interact (GxE), and how external social conditions influence basic internal biological processes. The ISG was designed to foster innovative, outstanding research programs that will stimulate productive interactions among faculty and students across the campus to create an interdisciplinary social genomics research community.

PHS is an interdisciplinary department with the goal of understanding, preserving, and improving the health of populations and individuals. The individual selected for this role will contribute to the advancement of the PHS mission through research, teaching, and service. PHS is home to an interdisciplinary academic environment, with a strong track record of collaborative and innovative research. The successful applicant must be able to positively interact within a collaborative community of scholars throughout SMPH and across campus. The successful applicant will participate in administrative and committee work to support the clinical and scholarly missions of UW Health and the School of Medicine and Public Health. An essential part of these duties will be working in a collegial relationship with other faculty members.

The successful candidate will have their tenure home in the Department of Population Health Sciences, with potential for a joint appointment in another department and/or affiliate appointments with some set of interdisciplinary centers and institutes across campus, such as the Center for the Demography of Health and Aging, the Center for Demography and Ecology, the Institute for Research on Poverty, the Carbone Cancer Center, and the Center for Human Genomics and Precision Medicine.

Responsibilities:

70% Research: Develop and maintain a vigorous, cutting-edge, highly visible, and interdisciplinary research program that specializes in integrating genomic epidemiologic methods within the social, behavioral, and/or health sciences. Research programs may include (but are not limited to) innovative uses of polygenic scores and gene-environment/behavioral interactions involved in health and disease.

15% Teaching: Teach one PHS course per academic year.

10%: Advising: Advise and mentor graduate students in PHS Population Health and Epidemiology programs and other relevant degree programs at UW-Madison.

5%: Service: Participate in faculty governance and service to the department, school, university, and profession, as appropriate.

PhD or other doctoral level degree in Epidemiology or a related discipline is required.

Qualifications:

Candidates must combine genetic/genomic epidemiology and social/behavioral health in their research. Relevant areas of methodologic expertise include, but are not limited to, polygenic scores and gene-environment/behavioral interactions involved in health and disease.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
