Indiana University Northwest, one of seven campuses of Indiana University, is seeking a dynamic, innovative, and equity-focused leader as Dean of the College of Health and Human Services located in metropolitan Northwest Indiana, approximately 30 miles southeast of Chicago and 10 miles from the Indiana Dunes National Park. At Indiana University Northwest, the Dean of the College of Health and Human Services is a leader in health care education and public services preparation. The Dean exercises broad responsibilities for all aspects of the academic, student, and external community dimensions in coordination with faculty and other university leaders. The Dean of the College of Health and Human Services reports to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

The IU Northwest College of Health and Human Services provides students a premier undergraduate and graduate education through its fully accredited programs (Nursing, Health Information Management, Dental Education, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Radiological Sciences).

The position is a twelve-month appointment that will include a tenured faculty appointment in one of the academic programs offered in the College.

Position Summary:

Supervision: Supervise and provide leadership for the faculty and exempt and non-exempt staff in the College of Health and Human Services. This currently involves a budget of $6.8 million, preparation of yearly budget requests, and regular monitoring of revenue and expenses.

Accreditation: Monitor accreditation of each of the reporting units by keeping abreast of changing accreditation standards and by supporting the development of programs and curricula that meet accreditation standards.

Recruitment and retention: Implement a clear action plan to enhance faculty, staff, and student recruitment and retention. Build upon an environment of stability, equity, and inclusion for all faculty, staff, and students.

Leadership: Ensure academic excellence in the hiring, promotion and tenure of faculty in Indiana University Northwest’s College of Health and Human Services; communicate a clear vision for Indiana University Northwest’s College of Health and Human Services, including the Schools of Nursing, Social Work, Public and Environmental Affairs, and the Health Information Management, Radiological Sciences, and Dental Education programs, emphasizing the campus and university commitment to diversity and inclusion, community engagement, research with undergraduate students, and programmatic assessment, to ensure continuous quality improvement.

Curriculum and academics: Continue to advance and elevate the quality of teaching and curricula by interrogating and implementing national and accredited best practices, continuous quality improvement, and by implementing specific methods for the evaluation of teaching, including observation; focus on curricular development that prepares students for addressing health disparities and emphasizing quality clinical training and partnerships.

Teamwork: Work productively with the other academic Deans and the Executive Vice Chancellor from the Indiana University Northwest campus, all campuses of Indiana University, and with external constituencies, to ensure the success of the academic programs in the college, and the success of our graduates.

Fund raising: This individual will seek external funding opportunities together with the Vice Chancellor for External Affairs and the campus Chancellor.

Required Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in a discipline finding its home in Indiana University Northwest’s College of Health and Human Services (Nursing, Public and Environmental Affairs, Social Work, Dental Education, Health Information Management, and Radiologic Sciences)
  • Demonstrated inclusive leadership, committed to promoting diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in curricula, student services, and in personnel and leadership decisions in a school, college, or department.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Progressively responsible academic administrative experience
  • Strong evidence of managerial experience directly supervising faculty/staff, and working with budget
  • Demonstrated commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and research
  • Experience with accreditation in the disciplines found in the College of Health and Human Services
  • Knowledge and skills directly related to leadership in the preparation of future certified professionals who could graduate from IU Northwest’s College of Health and Human Services
  • A record of distinguished scholarship
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the opportunities and challenges facing higher education today
  • A leadership style that influences the community (internal and external) to identify and face challenges; that is adaptable, inclusive, and decisive
  • Financial acumen and proven abilities in budgetary and financial management
  • A track record as an effective manager of people with a management style built on respect, communication, collaboration, and fairness
  • A reputation for integrity, transparency, accountability, and enthusiasm
  • Interpersonal skills that enable effective relationships with all stakeholders, including other University leaders, alumni, advisory boards, professional officials, and leaders in the industries represented in the College of Health and Human Services
  • Superior written and oral communication skills
  • Direct experience supervising and managing clinical academic settings.
