Position Summary

This is a 12-month Wellness Center staff position. This position will serve as a counseling resource to the College community by performing such duties as individual counseling (based on a brief therapy model/philosophy), group counseling/therapy, crisis intervention, assessment, case management, referral, and training. . In addition, participation in campus events such as orientations and outreach programming for the college community in areas related to the mental health and well-being of the college student population.

Description of Key Responsibilities

1. Provide counseling services and resources to students and employees of the College. Perform such duties as short-term individual therapy and group therapy, crisis intervention, case management, training and consultation. This includes an on-call responsibility shared with full time clinical staff of 24-hour a day, 7 days a week emergency consultation and/or intervention and office and/or on-call coverage when the Director of Counseling is away or unavailable.
2. Develop relationships with the college community by interacting and initiating contacts with student groups and organizations, residence hall units, and groups serving specific student populations such as commuters and international students. Establish a collaborative relationship with other departments such as Student Involvement, Psychology, Athletic Department, Dean of Students Office, Academic Support Center, Campus Safety, Multicultural Affairs, Residence Life and Faith & Action.
3. Assist with the assessment process for students dealing with drug and alcohol issues as well as alcohol/drug education programming. Provide drug and alcohol assessments, referral and/or counseling as needed for students referred to the Center through the campus student conduct process.
4. Assist with the assessment process for students dealing with other issues (self-harm, depression, eating disorders, etc.) Provide assessments, referral and/or counseling as needed for students referred to the Center through the campus student conduct process or other referral processes.
5. Advise student groups that have a wellness focus. Provide direction and assistance with student groups doing wellness programming.
6. Make appropriate off-campus referrals when necessary. Follow up with students mandated to seek off-campus counseling. Provide reports on student compliance with mandated off-campus counseling to immediate supervisor and/or the Dean of Students.
7. Stay current on health and mental health issues, particularly as they relate to college student populations. Participate in continuing education as required for state licensure.
8. Assist with proactive mental health, psychological and counseling related educational programming resources to the various constituencies of the College. Lead and/or guide the Graduate Assistant, Peer Health Educators, and Sports Psychology Interns to lead workshops, seminars and outreach programming. Topics are to relate to the well-being of students and other members of our community and may deal with issues such as substance abuse, anger management, violence prevention, eating disorders, relationship development, mood disorders, depression, decision-making, etc.
9. Participate in logistical activities such as delivering materials to be picked up from print shop, mailroom, vendor facilities, and other locations, sometimes off campus.
10. Perform other related duties and tasks as appropriately assigned.

13. Strong ability to work with electronic records system, Titanium, as well as scan, and use technology regularly. Interest in gaining technological skills to work most efficiently
14. Ability to work effectively as a member of a staff where teamwork and cooperation are the rule. This includes the ability to communicate directly, professionally, and respectfully both positive and critical feedback
15. Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in a manner consistent with professional standards, including making oral presentations to groups and contributing to the development of high-quality written materials which reflect positively on the College
16. Ability to quickly grasp knowledge of the College organization and operation especially as it relates to the Dyson Wellness Center

Distinguishing Characteristics

The person in this position assists the Director of the Wellness Center and Director of Counseling by providing counseling services and consultations to current students and employees of the College, and administrative duties supporting the counseling services. In conjunction with the Director of Counseling, the person in this position may provide leadership for the counselors such as case documentation oversight and supervision of Licensed Professional Counselors as needed.

The position will require evening and weekend hours as needed to meet the needs of a residential campus.

Education/Training

Master’s degree in counseling or clinical psychology, social work, or a related field.

Experience

Prior experience in individual and group therapies, crisis intervention, outreach and psychoeducational programming and training. Some experience in a higher education academic setting is preferred as well as a strong desire to work with young adult/college aged populations and possesses multicultural competence. Experience working with Eating Disorders and/or Substance Abuse/Addictions and/or Spectrum Disorders preferred. Experience working with athletes and/or Sport Psychology background preferred.

Licenses or Certifications

A licensed clinician in the state of Illinois: Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Licensed Clinical Psychologist as required by the State of Illinois or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required.
