About the Department/Unit

Join an award-winning creative team that uses engaging storytelling to promote American University's business school. Our values are simple: use business as a force for meaningful change. You'll work in an internal agency, where our customers are fellow departments, faculty members, and school leadership. You'll also collaborate with other creatives, including a social media manager, designers, writers, digital marketers, and event managers.

Summary/Objective

The videographer will be responsible for creating engaging and sophisticated videos, animations, presentations, and still graphics for the Kogod School of Business’s websites, advertisements, and social media. The individual in this role must have a strong sense of design, color, typography, and information hierarchy. Communication and storytelling skills are also critical to this position. The videographer will collaborate frequently with the senior designer, other multimedia designers, social media manager, and content coordinators to design informative and visually appealing media that tells Kogod’s story.

Required skills for this position include the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and After Effects; animation software of choice; PowerPoint; and the ability to shoot well-composed videos and photographs on a mobile phone or digital SLR camera. Proficiency in software like Sketch, Blender, Maya and other design software will also be considered. This is a union-eligible position.

Essential Functions
  1. Create and edit moving content for all Kogod School of Business-owned media, including the school website, intranet, social media channels, promotional materials, e-mail campaigns, and other initiatives.
  2. Shoot video and take photographs.
  3. Research design trends and competitors’ output to ensure Kogod’s content is modern, accessible, and appealing.
  4. Design smaller projects such as internal-facing flyers, email graphics, and event announcement screens.
  5. Complete special projects assigned by the director and marketing and communications team members.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
  • Full Time, 35 Hours/week with hybrid schedule.
  • Coordinator/Analyst B.
  • Non-Exempt.
  • This is a union-eligible position.
Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, multimedia design, or related field required.
  • 0-2 years professional experience required.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • The ideal candidate for this position can work within established brand guidelines while also contributing new and creative ideas; understand the importance of sound design in video and animation; understand accessibility requirements and how to create closed captioning/subtitles; and be able to collaborate with teammates to establish project requirements and then work individually.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • A portfolio of work that demonstrates skill in videography and multimedia design.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new software and design skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot creative software.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to spot typos and proof work before presenting the final product.
  • Ability to manage projects/time well.

This position is part of a collective bargaining unit represented by SEIU Local 500. That means the terms and conditions of your employment are governed by university policy (including the Staff Personnel Policies Manual) and any collective bargaining agreement entered into between American University and SEIU Local 500.
