San Diego State University

Description
San Diego State University is seeking to build our pool of faculty to teach a new BA degree program at Centinela State Prison. Experience teaching in prisons is welcome but not required. Faculty will receive training to be successful teaching in this rewarding and unique environment.
San Diego State University has been invited to participate in the Second Chance Pell project of the United States Department of Education. This nationwide initiative is designed to allow incarcerated individuals access to federal need-based financial aid to pursue educational programs.
SDSU will be offering a two-year interdisciplinary (IS3D) degree through Faculty Advancement and Student Success and Global Campus, with the goal of providing critical and creative thinking, innovation, and job development. Departments represented include Art and Design, Communication, and Journalism and Media Studies. We anticipate offering the following courses:
SUMMER 2023
JMS 200: Introduction to Contemporary Media
JMS 220: Writing for the Mass Media
ART 101: Two Dimensional Design
ART 241: Graphic Design I
FALL 2023:
JMS 315: Digital Media Principles and Design
COMM 300: Conceptualizing Communication
COMM 245 Interpersonal Communication
ART 341: Graphic Design II
All courses will be offered through SDSU Global Campus; instruction will be in person, on-site at Centinela Prison under the terms and conditions set forth in Article 40 of the California Faculty Association contract. SDSU faculty will be assigned Global Campus work as additional employment under the terms of Article 38 and does not diminish entitlement rights associated with stateside appointments. Compensation is on a per-course basis; additional compensation for on-site training and reimbursement of travel expenses to and from the Centinela Prison site will be reimbursed. Anticipated salary range is available here.
