POSITION PURPOSE: Under the general supervision of the Director of Enterprise Applications, the Enterprise Data Engineer is responsible for developing data management and storage solutions to ensure CSUB data is stored effectively and securely. The duties include building, maintaining, and expanding the campus' data ecosystem and performing functions around loading, extracting, and transforming data from a myriad of systems to the campus data environments. Additionally, the duties include working with subject matter experts to identify data sources, collaborating with stakeholders to determine their data storage and organizational needs, and using the information to create and maintain data infrastructure to support campus missions.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop and Maintain Data Management and Storage Solutions
  • Act as subject matter expert/specialist in designing, building, and maintaining data warehouse architecture for the
  • University. Stakeholders and report writers rely on incumbent's expertise in curating data from multiple data sources
  • in order to support the campus' goals of data driven decision-making.
  • Work with our committees and ITS to develop standards and our metadata for the data ecosystem.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to identify data sources, data definitions, and frequency of updates.
  • Work with campus stakeholders to identify future reporting needs and requirements.
  • Partner with analysts to design optimized SQL queries, enabling scalable reporting with a growing data volume.
  • Partner with data scientists and analysts to design effective data pipelines required for data modeling.
  • Develop solutions to store and retrieve information.
  • Develop integrations to extract, transform, and load data into other storage systems.
  • Design conceptual and logical data models and flowcharts.
  • Provide continual assessment of data systems performance and identification and tuning of problem areas.
  • Monitor applications and make recommendations on upgrades or new functionality.
  • Migrate data from legacy systems to new data store solutions.
  • Leverage CSU provided data lake to augment campus data ecosystem.
  • Research and properly evaluate sources of information to determine possible limitations in reliability or usability.
  • Document current state, future state, and provide recommendations for improvement.

Database Admin & Support
  • Install and configure data storage solutions to ensure functionality.
  • Improve system performance by conducting tests, troubleshooting, and integrating new elements.
  • Define backup procedures and data restoration procedures.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE – Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer information systems, or a related degree. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on year-for-year basis. Minimum of 2 years of recent (within 5 years) full-time experience in developing and supporting a data warehouse or other experience directly related to the position.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES (SKA's) –

  • In-depth understanding of data storage structure principles to maximize efficiency and flexibility.

  • Ability to work and communicate with users to define and meet data warehousing needs and requirements.
  • Knowledge gathering and analyzing system requirements.
  • Knowledge of data mining and segmentation techniques.
  • Knowledge of RDBMS and cloud-based storage solutions.
  • Knowledge of Azure and/or Amazon data environments (warehousing, storage, reporting).
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (Amazon, Azure, Tableau, Pyramid Analytics).
  • Proven analytical skills and a problem-solving attitude.
  • Strong math and analytical skills are essential to complete job requirements successfully.
  • Able to compile and organize statistical information retrieved and present findings to management.
  • Experience working with private and sensitive personal information.
  • Confident in decision making and the ability to explain processes or choices as needed.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism.

  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies, and procedures.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Prior work experience with PeopleSoft Campus Solution Applications or data structures.
  • Prior work experience with enterprise level systems.
  • Proven work experience as a Data Engineer.
  • Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: SEDENTARY WORK - involves mainly sitting; minimal walking and standing; lifting light weight objects limited to 15 pounds.
