Job Description: Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The School of Education (SOE) in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University invites applications for a tenure-line faculty position in Social Studies Education at the rank of Assistant Professor with a start date of 8/16/23. 

We seek a dynamic, innovative, and enthusiastic colleague who is concern with supporting the development of pre-service elementary social studies teachers.  The successful candidate should demonstrate a knowledge of and commitment to equitable social studies teaching practices and “Powerful, Purposeful Pedagogy in Elementary School Social Studies”.  In addition to teaching undergraduate courses in Social Studies Education, we seek a colleague who will teach graduate courses, engage in scholarly research, pursue and secure external funding, serve on a master’s and doctoral committees, and be involved with local, state, and national activities that support social studies education.  We are particularly interested in scholars with a research focus on elementary social studies education who have experience with implementation of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) standards for students, educators, and education leaders.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Doctorate in Social Studies Education or related field by the start date (8/16/23)

Licensure/certification (in any state) in education

At least one year(post-certification/licensure) of professional experience as an elementary school teacher

Preferred Qualifications:

Completion of a teacher preparation program and three or more years as a successful elementary or K-8 teacher.

Experience working in/with the preparation of elementary social studies teachers.

Experience of effective teaching at the post-secondary level.

Evidence of potential to develop an active research agenda, establish a strong publication record, and secure external funding commensurate with rank of Assistant Professor (tenure-track) at Iowa State University.

Evidence of a commitment to equity in education in research and professional practice.

Evidence of the potential for a sustained scholarly focus on equity in education.
