Director of Academic Advising

Job Summary

Elmhurst University is seeking a Director of Academic Advising to provide vision, leadership, and oversight for the University’s undergraduate academic advising program, housed under Academic Affairs. The Director will uphold high standards for the Office of Academic Advising by fostering a culture of collaboration, creativity and professional development among the growing advising team; developing efficient procedures and ensuring the appropriate use of advising technology systems; and cultivating the University’s blended faculty and professional advisor model with a focus on faculty development and best practices to support a diverse student population at a recently designated Hispanic-Serving Institution. The ideal candidate will be active in the field and engaged with professional organizations like NACADA (National Academic Advising Association) and ILACADA (Illinois Academic Advising Association) to ensure the Advising Office and University benefit from the national conversations about holistic advising, retention and student success. The Director will build strong partnerships with faculty, staff, and multiple campus offices that serve students. Depending on credentials and interest, candidate may have the opportunity to teach within the scope of the position.

Essential Functions
  • Leads the Office of Academic Advising, including oversight of undergraduate student advising services, ongoing training and development for faculty advisors, implementation and review of policies and procedures, and development of online and print materials.
  • Directs, plans, supervises, and evaluates the work of academic advisors, and ensures ongoing learning and professional development.
  • Depending on the needs of the office, may maintain an advising caseload.
  • Proactively partners with Registration and Records, the Learning Center, Access and Disability Services, pre-professional advisors, and deans, department chairs, and program directors to ensure coordinated efforts, efficient communication, and comprehensive student advising services.
  • Serves as a subject-matter expert regarding the Elmhurst University Integrated Curriculum, including writing, mathematics, and language proficiencies, Areas of Knowledge and Skills and Value Development course requirements, and experiential and capstone requirements.
  • Maintains proficient knowledge of all majors and minors and course sequencing and graduation requirements.
  • Contributes expertise with advising practices and curriculum to assist in developing and recommending policies, exceptions and procedures.
  • Collaborates with Registration and Records to ensure efficient major and minor change processing, degree audit practices, and graduation evaluation.
  • Partners with Admission and the transfer articulations team to ensure accurate course selection for incoming transfer students.
  • Serves on the Academic Standings Committee ( ASC ), Summer Orientation, Advising and Registration ( SOAR ) Committee, Appeals committees, and represents the Office of Academic Advising in all other assigned capacities.
  • Leads the scheduling, planning, and facilitation of multiple summer advising dates for incoming first-year and transfer students.
  • Ensures availability of advising services to students in-person and via video conference, phone, and email in a prompt, friendly, and professional manner.
  • Ensures students are provided consistent, accurate and prompt advising services in coordination with academic departments and serves as a resource for faculty advisors.
  • Collects data, researches current best practices in advising, and assesses the effectiveness of the University’s advising services to identify opportunities for increased student success, engagement, and retention.
  • Develops efficient procedures ensuring the appropriate use of advising technology systems and campus-wide systems.
  • Participates in professional development through NACADA (National Academic Advising Association), ILACADA (Illinois Academic Advising Association), and other professional organizations to foster continuous growth and development as an Advisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or related field.
  • Five or more years of professional academic advising experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Progressively responsible work experience in building advising and/or student success programs.
  • Ability to effectively engage with postsecondary students of diverse ages and backgrounds.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, team-building and conflict-resolution skills.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in student success.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Management or leadership experience in an academic advisory and supervisory role working with postsecondary students.
  • Member of the National Academic Advising Association ( NACADA ) and ILACADA (Illinois Academic Advising Association).
  • Experience working in EAB Navigate, Ellucian Colleague, and Technolutions Slate
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements

Employee is subject to indoor work, protected from weather conditions. Work is sedentary in nature and involves exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently/constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Duties are expected to be performed onsite with extended hours in January and June.
