The Department of Family Medicine and Population Health and the Center on Society and Health are leaders
in education and research. We are looking for a full‐time Financial Specialist to join our team to provide dayto‐
day operational support across all financial transactions.

Finance Specialists perform entry-level professional work requiring an in-depth knowledge of one or more specialized functional areas which may include finance, accounting, procurement, budget, or treasury. Their work involves initiating and maintaining accounting records and files pertinent to the receipt and disbursement of authorized funds; supplying accounting information and reports to a supervisor and/or executive management team; providing monthly reports and information for all accounts concerning allowed expenditures, commitments and balances; preparing and/or reviewing procurement, travel, petty cash, deposits, and other fiscal documents; monitoring budgets to determine trends or needs for adjustment; and assisting faculty in the development and preparation of budgets for funding proposals. They may work independently or as a member of a team. They work under general supervision, making complex decisions independently and referring unprecedented issues to an upper-level manager. Finance Specialists typically report to a manager or director or in some units may report to an administrator.


Core Responsibilities
  • Execute all fiscal transactions and maintain a high level knowledge in areas related to procurement, travel,reimbursements, Banner finance, and other fiscal areas.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations for all Banner indexes, including payroll, and review with appropriate Directors for approval; reconcile revenue from tuition as needed.
  • Determine and execute appropriate budget entries to appropriately fund operations
    Serve as the primary point of contact for faculty and staff for questions on fiscal transactions and provide a high level of proactive customer service related to fiscal coordination.

  • Prepare and deliver both regular and ad hoc reports on expenditures compared to
    budget, analysis of expenditure type, and projections of future expenditure needs.
  • Assist with the budget development process, including revenue projection and
    expense allocations
  • Demonstrate a commitment to risk assessment (considering cost, benefit, and
    impact) and risk management
  • Train and serve as Fiscal Support for departments
  • Bachelor's degree and 1-3 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Minimum Hiring Standards
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Outstanding work ethic and excellent attendance record.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the proven ability to multitask, troubleshoot and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Accounting or Finance related area is preferred.
  • Experiences using financial recordkeeping and/or procurement software systems such as Banner
  • Finance or VCU Real Source and VCU’s travel policies.
  • One to three years in administrative support role preferably with financial experience or equivalent
    combination of education, training, and experience.
