(Job #525073) Sergeant, University Police, Salary Range: $6,429 - $9,924 monthly. Hiring Range: $6,429 - $7,369 monthly. Appointments are typically made at the beginning of the salary range. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, benefited, non-exempt, 12-month pay plan, permanent position with a one-year probationary period in the University Police Department. This position comes with a premium benefits package that includes outstanding vacation, medical, dental, and vision plans, life insurance, voluntary pre-tax health and dependent care reimbursement accounts, a fee waiver education program, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), and 14 paid holidays per year. Position Summary: Under the direction of the Police Lieutenant or the Chief of Police, the Sergeant is a first-line supervisory classification. The Sergeant assigns, coordinates, supervises, motivates, informs, and directs police personnel on a shift. The Sergeant often serves as the designated Watch Commander, reviewing and taking responsibility for the police activities of the shift, appropriate follow-up actions and investigations. The Sergeant ensures timely preparation of thorough, accurate reports and other documentation. The Sergeant directly supervises patrol officer(s), dispatchers, and provides direction and leadership for other non-sworn personnel as necessary. The Sergeant makes operational and safety decisions, following the law and policy, taking action to minimize risk to the campus. The Sergeant must be a positive and effective leader for staff, the campus community, and local emergency responders. The Sergeant is the Incident Commander for significant campus events, serious crimes, emergency situations, and disasters. The Sergeant may be assigned to a variety of critical leadership roles including serving as the Police Department Operations Center Director. The Sergeant develops, implements and enforces campus and department policies and procedures. The Sergeant trains new and existing personnel, develops, and evaluates assigned staff. The Sergeant responds to low-level performance problems and personnel issues, documents and coordinates an effective response to these matters, and carries out internal investigations as assigned. The Sergeant may be assigned to committees and participates in operational and staff meetings. The Sergeant must positively reflect and convey the department mission and objectives of management and may be assigned as acting Lieutenant or acting Chief. The Sergeant may be given other duties as assigned. The Sergeant also conducts general law enforcement, proactive patrol, investigations, event management, and community policing duties.
