Job Summary

Postdoc on Human-Centered Development of AI Partners to Support Group Collaboration

The Institute of Cognitive Science at the University of Colorado Boulder seeks applicants for a postdoctoral research position focused on the design and development of AI Partners to support group collaboration. The candidate will work with interdisciplinary researchers in the NSF-funded Institute for Student-AI Teaming (iSAT). The goal of iSAT is to reframe the role of AI in education, moving towards a future where AI is viewed as a social, collaborative partner that helps students work and learn more effectively, engagingly, and equitably, while helping educators focus on what they do best: inspiring and teaching students.

We are seeking an excellent postdoc candidate with interests at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), who has technical programming skillets to support iterative development of AI partners, laboratory testing of various AI partner designs, and multimodal data analysis (e.g. video, speech, eyetracking data).

The ideal candidate will have a strong publication record in areas including social, cognitive, affective state modeling with multimodal data, intelligent interactive systems, HCI, AI, affective computing, Prototype development of User Interfaces, and related fields. Experience working in the educational domain is not a requirement.

The University of Colorado Boulder is committed to building a culturally diverse community of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to contributing to an inclusive campus environment. We are an Equal Opportunity employer, including veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

The National Science Foundation Institute for Student-AI Teaming ( www.iSAT.ai) brings together a geographically distributed team from nine universities with partners from academia, K-12 school districts, and industry to address how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can collaborate with students and teachers to promote meaningful learning experiences for all students.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
  • Attend weekly in-person and virtual team meetings with iSAT team members.
  • Take a leadership role overseeing PhD, Masters, and undergraduate students in the design and implementation of HCI experiments in the iSAT Lab focused on topics such as explainable AI, building trust in AI, information visualization, UI design and testing of different UX interaction paradigms.
  • Work with iSAT’s software development team to implement AI-based testbed environments to investigate in the iSAT Lab, which includes:
    • Extending the User Interfaces of iSAT’s existing AI-partners in order to investigate topics such as explainable AI, information visualization, and Human-Guided AI via human subject studies in the iSAT Lab.
  • Take a leading role in conducting and overseeing data analyses on the multimodal data collected in the lab (survey, performance, eyetracking, video, speech).
  • First authorship of high quality HCI-focused publications stemming from the data collections in the iSAT Lab.

What You Should Know
  • 1-2 year position. Initial contract is for one year (providing renewal after 6-month probationary period). For each consecutive year, the extension of the contract is based on performance.
  • Start date is negotiable, but anticipated for summer or Fall of 23.
  • The candidate will be supervised by Professor Leanne Hirshfield. The position offers unique postdoctoral training experience and publishing opportunities within multi-department and multi-institution grant-funded projects. The postdoc will be encouraged to strengthen their research portfolios via peer-reviewed publications, gain interdisciplinary experience by working with a diverse team, and develop leadership skills by mentoring students.
What We Can Offer
  • Competitive salary ranging $67,000 to $75,000 with benefits commensurate with qualifications.
  • This position is eligible for medical, dental and life insurance, retirement benefits programs, and is eligible for monthly vacation and sick leave accruals.
Benefits

The University of Colorado offers excellent benefits , including medical, dental, retirement, paid time off, tuition benefit and ECO Pass. • Experience designing and implementing HCI-focused laboratory experiments and applying appropriate research/evaluation methodology and analysis.
  • Strong writing and communication skills (as evident by first author publications) and ability to conduct research in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Experience working with (some subset of) multimodal data, including video, action log-file, eyetracking, and speech data.
