Senior Philanthropy Advisor

Job Description

Missouri Western State University is searching for a Senior Philanthropy Advisor . Reporting to the Vice President for Advancement, the Senior Philanthropic Advisor is responsible for directly engaging and soliciting prospective donors of six- and seven-figures gifts from a unique, assigned portfolio of corporations, foundations, and nonprofit organizations. This senior position has no routine programmatic responsibilities or direct report. Engaging donors locally, in Kansas City, and traveling beyond the region at least 25% of their time, the Advisor will conduct numerous face-to-face donor visits and complete 15 to 17 significant relationship advancements per month. Other means of communication and outreach will also be used to supplement these engagements. Upon reaching the third year in the role, the Advisor is expected to routinely raise at least $1.5 million per year, with an emphasis on outright cash gifts and multi-year cash pledges.

The Advisor is expected to help build their own portfolio and is responsible for writing proposals or grants for prospects within that portfolio. The Advisor may be assigned special projects, including but not restricted to building a network of high-level donors in Kansas City, meeting with previous donors to discuss potential updates to their gift agreements, and growing attendance at important events through direct outreach.

The Advisor will collaborate with colleagues in Advancement, the President’s Office, other University units, and philanthropic and volunteer organizations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of 125 to 175 prospects.
  • Conduct discovery, qualification, cultivation, solicitation visits and a modest number of stewardship visits.
  • Develop and deploy advanced donor cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Build a network of high-end donors and prospects in Kansas City. Travel beyond the region approximately 25% of the time.
  • Effectively engage, collaborate, and coordinate with campus partners, including administration, faculty, staff, and students. Coordinate and collaborate with volunteers and volunteer organizations.
  • As needed, write grants and proposals, and contribute to stewardship documents.
  • Observe procedures and best practices in promptly entering appropriately detailed contact reports into the constituent relationship management database
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • E xcellent written and oral communications skills
  • Mastery of development strategy and best practices
  • Strong knowledge of or ability to master legal matters associated with fundraising, tax consequences of giving, and similar issues
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and programs, including all components of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work with a customer relationship management platform
  • Ability to confidently, positively, and effective engage a diverse range of individuals and successfully request their private support
  • Resilient and adaptable strategic thinker with demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and adjust to evolving priorities
  • Strong attention to detail and a track record of meeting deadlines

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 15 years of professional front-line, direct solicitation of major gifts, primarily in higher education
  • CFRM, CFRE, or CAP designation
  • Successful track record of personally closing six- and seven-figure philanthropic gifts
  • Experience using a fundraising CRM platform
  • Ability to use air travel and to drive to meet with donors
  • Valid Drivers License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree
  • Experience in leading a comprehensive development program
  • Experience with Blackbaud Raisers Edge CRM
Physical Demands

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work
