Job Description:

DIVISION: Finance

DEPARTMENT: Financial Planning & Analysis



BASIC FUNCTION: The Financial Analyst under the direction of the Associate VP for Financial Planning and Analysis generates analyses required for financial and managerial reporting, and strategic planning of the University. The Financial Analyst is responsible for developing and analyzing financial models and key metrics to assist the University with reviewing current operational performance, and long-term financial planning and strategic objectives.

UNUSUAL WORK CONDITIONS:

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL NEEDED:

EDUCATION: A bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Three to four years of well-rounded financial analysis and reporting experience, preferably in a university or non-profit setting, including:
  • Experience using enterprise-wide planning and reporting tools. Solid / advanced technical knowledge of databases and desktop applications (Workday, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Experience creating presentations to communicate financial data.

  • Thorough knowledge of GAAP Accounting (Non-Profit understanding preferred, but not required)

REPORTS TO: Associate Vice President for Financial Planning & Analysis

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Representative Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the development/improvement of and generate timely monthly financial reports and dashboards to senior management that are aligned to university strategy. Including but not limited to the following reports:
    • Executive Reporting Package

    • Financial Statements

    • Analysis and Commentary

    • Profit Center/Cost Center reporting

  • Assists with the development of the multi-year budget planning and performs analysis/feedback to support departmental inquiries

  • Assist in the production of the Program Review process; which provides analytical data based on a per school/department basis.

  • Provides expertise and initiative on policy development, best practices, process improvement, and compliance with regard to financial operations.

  • Develops management and financial models to test new ideas, projects and processes.

  • Identifies effective indicators of financial performance and assesses performance against financial plans and strategic objectives. Develops models and dashboards for financial analysis, forecasting and reporting, including peer comparisons, trend data and cost studies.

  • Provides support and consultation to the Associate VP of Financial Planning & Analysis, University departments and others on financial forecasting, reporting and analysis.

Cross organization collaboration skills and team leadership:
  • Experience working in a collaborative environment in which results are achieved through partnerships and collaboration, rather than direct authority. Able to work effectively with a broad range of faculty, staff and administrators across campus.

  • Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Able to present complex issues to a variety of audiences and financial skill levels.

Exceptional analytical capabilities:
  • Skilled at developing performance metrics, analysis and financial reports that guide decision making.

  • Aptitude to quickly grasp the business of the University and a thorough understanding of accounting and financial principles.

Participates in the professional development of the department. This involves:
  • promoting efficiency and courtesy throughout the University community

  • participating in departmental/staff meetings as necessary

  • communicating effectively with supervisor concerning pertinent matters

Performs other duties as related or dictated by responsibilities.
