Job Description
At Simmons, we take an innovative, intersectional, survivor-centered and social justice-based approach to violence prevention, education, and awareness. Our work prioritizes providing students with the holistic tools needed to cultivate lifelong healthy relationships and emphasizes community responsibility. The coordinator will be instrumental to providing holistic, individualized support to Simmons students experiencing issues related to intimate partner violence, sexual assault, stalking, and other basic needs. The coordinator will also be responsible for developing and implementing educational programming related to violence prevention and advise a very active and engaged group of students who coordinate Betsy's Friends.
The coordinator will be responsible for strategic and relevant programming that encourages students to examine how intimate partner violence impacts their communities, with a focus on igniting these conversations in our underrepresented student populations. Through this work, the program coordinator promotes students' ability to envision and actualize healthy relationships and safer, consensual sex. In addition to program planning, the coordinator will oversee the vibrant Betsy's Friends Peer Education Program. As their advisor, the coordinator will foster student leaders to create programming that meets the unique needs of our women's-centered institution and identify creative outreach opportunities. This position is best suited for someone who loves working with young activists, is creative, thinks outside the box, enjoys collaboration, and works towards a radical vision of what a truly violence-free community can look like. In addition, the coordinator will also serve as a case manager for undergraduate and graduate student basic needs concerns including assisting students who may be struggling emotionally or academically or who may have been recommended to the University's CARE team. This position is also a confidential reporter and will report to the Dean of Student Experience.
Case Management and Basic Needs Support (40%):
- Triage individualized graduate and undergraduate student cases,
identify basic needs and align students with the right
resources.
- Work closely with staff in the Counseling Center and the Health
Center to support students in distress or in need of a referral to
supportive resources.
- Coordinate programming and marketing to promote available
resources and supports.
Violence Prevention Responsibilities (60%):
- Cultivate a survivor-centered, trauma informed and
healing-focused approach to violence prevention and
education
- Work with student leaders to develop and implement creative and
innovative violence prevention, education and awareness programs
related to gender-based violence (e.g. sexual and intimate partner
violence, stalking, etc.)
- Promote healthy relationships, consent, safer sex, personal
safety, bystander intervention, and risk reduction (e.g. safer
partying)
- Identify trends on campus, recognize emerging student needs and
approach programming in a way that translates to the needs and
climate of our unique women's-centered college
- Work in collaboration with the Multicultural Center to identify
and implement targeted programming to meet the needs of
underrepresented students on campus, including students of color,
queer and trans/non-binary students, etc.
- Work with a variety of different communication on issues
related to comfort with sex and dating.
- Partner with the Health, Wellness and Recreation program to
intentionally merge conversations and education around sexuality,
sexual health, sex positivity, pleasure and consent, and provide
students with skills to discuss these important topics with their
partners
- Develop and facilitate presentations for new student
orientations as requested
- Work with student leaders to create and implement trainings and
programming focused on intersectional social justice issues in
relation to violence prevention and healthy
relationships
- Administer and track compliance of online learning modules for
first year, graduate, online, and student athlete
communities
- Work in partnership with various on-campus constituents
including student organizations, Student Affairs offices, residence
life, faculty, staff, etc.
- Develop and cultivate relationships with local and national
non-profit organizations that work to prevent gender-based violence
and support survivors, and bring experts of diverse identities to
campus to share their knowledge with our student
communities
- Advise student run organization, Betsy's Friends, a healthy
relationship and violence prevention-focused peer education
program; recruit, train, and supervise student peer educators,
volunteers and interns to help plan and implement violence
prevention and education programs on campus
- Participate in committee meetings and initiatives related to
campus safety, diversity, equity and inclusion, etc.
- Write and present an annual report to highlight emerging
student needs and trends, annual programming, student attendance at
events, and impact of prevention initiatives
- Report incidents of gender-based discrimination, harassment and
violence for Title IX and Clery purposes
- Refer students to resources and support on and off
campus
- Manages daily financial operations, including submitting annual
budget requests, maintaining programming budget, reconciling
monthly credit card statements, managing student hiring and
payroll
- Other tasks as assigned by the Director
Qualifications:
- Master's degree preferred, Bachelor's degree required, in Women
and Gender Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Counseling, Public
Health or related field preferred
- 2-5 years of experience working in this violence prevention and
survivor advocacy, case management or other related
field
- Familiarity with Title IX Federal law and the implications of
gender-based misconduct on college campuses a plus
- Commitment to working with underrepresented populations of
students, including an understanding in the way systems of bias
operate and their impact on student experiences as well as the
dynamics of privilege and oppression
- Proven ability to manage confidentiality and sensitive
information
- Experience working with youth and/or college-age
students
- Prior experience creating, planning and implementing unique,
engaging and relevant programming ideas a plus
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a
team
- Rape Crisis Counselor or Domestic Violence Survivor Advocate
certification, or a willingness to obtain this certification upon
hire sponsored by Simmons
- Willing and able to host regular after-hours programming and
work occasional weekends
