Position Summary

Georgia Electron Microscopy ( GEM ), a core facility at the University of Georgia, seeks to appoint an experienced electron microscopist as the new Managing Director. This individual will hold an Academic Professional faculty appointment (rank commensurate with experience) based in the Office of Research. The Managing Director will be responsible for all facility operations, including equipment, electron microscopy services ( SEM, cryo- SEM, STEM, TEM, veterinary diagnostics), user training, student education, outreach activities, financial transactions, and staff supervision. In addition, this individual will work with the Academic Director to develop strategic plans and future capabilities that support researchers in diverse departments across the University of Georgia. Current major equipment includes a Hitachi SU9000EA, a Hitachi SU3900 with Quorum cryo-prep system, a Thermo-Fisher Teneo, and a JEOL JEM1011. Services range from full sample preparation and data collection by staff to microscope operation by users. GEM operates as a cost-recovery facility.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
  • 5 years prior experience as a staff member of an electron microscopy core facility.
  • Technical proficiency with installing, operating, and maintaining electron microscopes; familiarity with Hitachi and JEOL equipment preferred
  • Broad proficiency with electron microscopy, sample preparation, and data processing/analysis methods.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Knowledge of core facility operations, including financial management systems
  • Ability to communicate effectively with users, clients, staff, and students
  • Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills applicable to facility leadership and staff supervision

Actively promote GEM’s services and capabilities, identify new users, and consult and collaborate with researchers and clients who have imaging needs.

Manage GEM’s financial operations related to budgeting, billing, ordering, and service contracts. Interface with the core management system used for scheduling, training requests, and billing.

Ensure the optimal maintenance and operation of major and ancillary equipment so as to provide researchers with the highest quality data. Ensure a safe and well-maintained facility in compliance with UGA and EH&S regulations.

Hire and supervise staff members to ensure the services provided by GEM remain excellent and work is conducted efficiently. Establish appropriate staff training, including developing standard operating procedures as needed. Support the continuing professional development of staff members. Cultivate a service-oriented, collaborative, and inclusive team environment.
