Job Description:
Amherst College invites applications for the Community Safety Assistant (CSA) position. The Community Safety Assistant is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $22.00 per hour. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they demonstrate competencies that support this broadly diverse community.
Adhering to the principle of community engagement and interdependent problem solving, the Community Safety Assistant works to intentionally build student support within a diverse community.
The CSAs support “Student Affairs” in the provision of services, including, but not limited to: management of social gatherings, disturbances / disputes and cooperative response to medical calls with Amherst College Emergency Medical Services (ACEMS) and or Amherst town Fire Department within the residence halls. The CSA tours campus residential and student-controlled facilities frequenting buildings and grounds to help safeguard against personal injury, fire, vandalism, or theft and to immediately notify relevant resources upon discovering such incidents. When assigned, the CSA will provide authorized access to residence halls and other facilities and provide safe escorts.
The Community Safety Assistant position is considered an essential position meaning the employee is expected to report to work even if the College is closed for weather related or other reasons. Some overtime, weekend, and occasional shift change work is required. Due to the nature of the position, the CSA must respond to emergencies as needed.
The CSA takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment. The Community Safety Assistant provides proactive and responsive services and works collaboratively with a wide range of campus partners including, but not limited to, ACPD, CSOs, Dispatch, Counseling Center, Health Center, and Facilities.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Addressing noise complaints originating from campus buildings
and grounds
- Assisting with student lockouts (in conjunction with Custodial
Services)
- Responding with ACPD to fire alarms or other similar life
safety-related concerns
- Joining and assisting ACEMS with medical calls, sometimes later
involving AFD
- Working with students and event hosts to reduce harm at
student-hosted social events
- Specifically, the team meets with student hosts prior to,
during, and after the completion of events to ensure students have
the information and tools they need to maintain a safe and
enjoyable environment during the registered gathering as well as to
ensure an understanding of policies, standards, and
requirements

- Assisting with student ID and key issuance and accessing
student storage
- Working with Administrator-on-Call in providing respite rooms
for students who need temporary change in location due to health,
safety, or interpersonal-related circumstances
- Staffing the Student Affairs Welcome Window on a rotation basis
with other CSAs and student staff
- Conducting annual lock inspections of student rooms within the
residence halls to ensure locking mechanisms are safe and
secure
- Responding with other Student Affairs staff to campus
demonstrations or disruptions
- Assisting the COVID testing center with after-hours antigen
testing and transporting COVID positive students to isolation when
appropriate
- Assisting ACPD with driving Mammoth Rides accessibility
van
- Shift and incident report writing on a daily basis during the
course of duty
- Understanding of the Clery Act, its reporting obligations, and
other requirements
Qualifications:
Required
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license and successful credential in order to
operate College vehicles
- Strong customer service, time management, and communication
skills
- Ability to take initiative; work independently and with team
members
- Commitment to, experience with and/or ability to work
effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals from a variety of
diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, written, and verbal communication
skills as well as the exercise of diplomacy and to function
efficiently under extreme conditions
- Requires sensitivity to issues of confidentiality
- CORI check with satisfactory results
Preferred
- Security, safety, or service experience
- Demonstrated understanding of anti-bias practices
- Current certification in First Responder training (CPR, First
Aid, Defibrillator, Epi-Pen and Narcan Administration)
- Certifications not yet attained by start date must be attained
without delay and with the assistance of the College
