Description
The Department of Theater and Dance at Amherst College, in collaboration with Five College Dance, invites applications for a Five College joint faculty lecturer in dance of Africa and the African Diaspora. The position is full time, with a term of four years, and is renewable at the lecturer rank, to begin on July 1, 2024. Candidates for this position should have a primary expertise in West African dance and additional expertise in other areas of African and/or African Diasporic dance technique and traditions.

Amherst College is one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country. Nearly half of our students identify as domestic students of color, and another 11 percent are international, with non-U.S. citizenship; 16 percent are the first members of their families to attend college. Amherst is committed to providing financial aid that meets 100 percent of every student's demonstrated need, and nearly 60 percent of our students receive financial aid. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual identity, disability/ability, and religion.

Responsibilities include teaching the equivalent of five full courses per year, distributed equally across the campuses of the participating institutions of the Five College Consortium: Amherst, Smith, and Mount Holyoke Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Two technique courses, or a technique course and a repertory course, are equivalent to a full course. As part of the overall load, the appointee will choreograph one repertory work per year, to be performed on one or more of the campuses. Additional responsibilities include attendance at Five College Dance faculty meetings and theater and dance department meetings on the appointee's home campus at Amherst College. The successful candidate will also help to shape a liberal-arts oriented dance curriculum in a department that emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

We will consider candidates with either a terminal degree (either an M.F.A. or a Ph.D.), or equivalent professional experience. Applicants are asked to submit electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com/124474 the following: a cover letter; curriculum vitae; statement of teaching philosophy, including philosophy of teaching a diverse student body; samples of creative work, and three confidential letters of recommendation. Applications received by October 15, 2023, will be assured full consideration; review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

Amherst is a private undergraduate liberal arts college, with 1,800 students and more than two hundred faculty members. Located in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts, Amherst participates with Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts in the Five College Consortium. Amherst College is an equal opportunity employer and encourages persons of all genders, persons of color, and persons with disabilities to apply.
