The Department of Literatures in English, Cornell University, invites applications for visiting lecturers to teach First-Year Writing Seminars beginning in academic year 2023-24. Renewal will be based on department needs.

As part of the university-wide First-Year Writing Seminars program administered by the John S. Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines, the department offers a wide range of courses in literature, film, and media; nature, the environment, and climate change; culture, politics, and identity; and in community engagement—connecting students with local community partners. The department’s First-Year Writing Seminar offerings may be viewed in Cornell’s online course catalog.

Depending on experience and desired course load, successful candidates may teach 2-3 courses per semester, and may teach either the fall 2023 semester only or for both fall 2023 and spring 2024 semesters (no spring-only positions available). Successful candidates with MFAs in creative writing may also teach one or more sections of ENGL 2800 Creative Writing.

Required qualifications are a PhD or MFA in English language and literature (or other literary field, such as comparative literature) and experience teaching writing at the undergraduate level. Preferred qualifications are experience teaching for the First-Year Writing Seminars program at Cornell University and/or experience developing writing course syllabi.

This is a 4.5-month or 9.5-month position beginning August 16, 2023. Visa sponsorship and relocation support are not available for this position. Visiting lecturers must teach in person on Cornell’s Ithaca campus.

Applications must be submitted through Academic Jobs Online #24947 (https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/24947) with the following materials:

  • A cover letter outlining your fit for the position, availability for fall 2023 and spring 2024, and preferred teaching load (2 or 3 courses per semester);
  • A curriculum vitae; A Statement of Contribution to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion;
  • At least one syllabus for a writing course you have taught (up to three syllabi are welcome).

Confidential letters of recommendation that speak to your teaching ability may be solicited later.

Review of applications will begin May 15; applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.
