Job Description

The Academy of Transdisciplinary Studies at Virginia Tech invites applications for a one-year faculty appointment (renewable up to 2 years) in Africana Studies and Technology at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP), beginning August 10, 2023.

We are interested in applicants who specialize in race and technology with research and teaching that focuses one or more of these areas: racism and technology; digital humanities; racial disparities in technology (including algorithmic bias and predictive policing); digital access; technology and capitalism; technology, innovation, and justice.

Responsibilities for the position include teaching three (3) courses per semester in Africana Studies and creating course content for the Tech for Humanities Pathways minor during summer. Teaching will include introductory-level Africana Studies courses as well as electives in the candidate’s area of expertise. The successful candidate should be prepared to enrich the analytical capabilities and perspectives of our undergraduate students and will be encouraged to participate in the expansion and leadership of Africana Studies at Virginia Tech. Required Qualifications

• PhD in Africana Studies, Black Studies, African-American Studies, African Diasporic Studies, Science and Technology (with a research focus on technology and race) or a closely related field in the humanities or social sciences by the time of appointment (August 2023).
• Evidence of excellence in teaching.
