Job Summary

Oversee the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach and Services in the development and implementation of programs and services that support sexual and gender diversity and serve as an institutional resource on this themes. Provide leadership and direction in creating and maintaining a campus environment that supports, reflects, and affirms LGBTQ equity, inclusion and belonging for LGBTQ students, alumni, faculty, staff, families, friends, and allies. Serve as a primary liaison to the college in creating and maintain an inclusive and equitable campus environment for students (academic, residential, co-curricular, social), and foster community through intersectional approaches. Due to the work of the Center, Ithaca College is consistently recognized as one of the top 40 LGBTQ friendly campuses in nation.

Supervision
The LGBT Education, Outreach & Services Director provides guidance, direction and supervision to staff assigned to the Center, including Pride Fellows, student assistants, staff in auxiliary placements in the Center, intern and practicum students, and volunteers. This position may provide guidance and direction to an Administrative Assistant assigned to support the LGBT Center. This position reports to the Executive Director of Student Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, and is part of the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life.

Position/Job Responsibilities
1. Provide leadership and direction for the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach & Services. Determine the scope and nature of the Center’s services and develop strategic plans. Plan, develop and launch ongoing assessments and program evaluations of student learning outcomes. Make necessary modifications to respond to changing student and college needs.

2. Design, implement, and promote educational, cultural, and social programs and services offered through the Center for LGBT Education Outreach and Services that fosters the academic success and personal growth and development of LGBTQ students. Provide consultation and support services, programming, training, and education regarding needs and concerns of LGBTQ students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Facilitate community building and outreach efforts, advising and support services.

3. Provide assistance to and advocacy for LGBTQ students through outreach programs, support, and community building. Create a program structure offering learning and engagement opportunities that increase awareness, equity, and inclusion, and foster community for LGBTQ students.

4. Develop and implement strategies to offer college-wide services to enhance the campus community’s understanding and appreciation of LGBTQ people, cultures and themes. Develop programs designed to inform and educate the campus community about LGBTQ people and themes, contributing to improved understanding, interpersonal relationships, and affirming campus climate. Implement educational workshops, programs, services, and policies to enhance and promote the campus community’s inclusion of issues and concerns that affect LGBTQ students, faculty and staff.

5. Provide assistance to students, faculty, staff and campus organizations on LGBTQ topics. Provide consultation regarding LGBTQ inclusion and LGBTQ themes to leadership of student organizations and faculty/staff advisors of student organizations.

6. Provide crisis intervention, management, support, and referral to appropriate campus and community resources. Serve as a resource on LGBTQ issues and concerns for the campus community including students, prospective students, staff, faculty, alumni, donors, and other campus and community programs as appropriate. As part of the role to support and advocate for our LGBTQ community, this position serves as a Title IX confidential resource for students, faculty and staff.

7. Serve on the Bias Impact Resource Team. Support students who have experienced discrimination or harassment based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, and assist them in understanding and considering reporting options. Work in collaboration with College departments to develop and implement strategies to monitor and respond to issues and concerns affecting the quality of life for the LGBTQ community.

8. Recruit, select, train, and provide guidance, direction, and supervision to staff, student employees and volunteer staff of the Center, and to fellows, interns, students in practicum placements, and professional staff in auxiliary placements in the Center.

9. Develop and provide consultation, professional development, training, education, technical assistance and support for staff and faculty, and offices such as Analytics and Institutional Research, Public Safety and Residential Life.

10. Develop and sustain successful collaborative initiatives, such as assisting LGBTQ students in their social and academic adjustment to campus life, and partnerships with other offices to advocate for equity in educational spaces at the intersections of multiple minoritized identities. Collaborate with academic and student affairs offices such as the Center for Student Engagement, Center for Faculty Excellence, and New Student & Transition Programs. Collaborate with Admission, Center for Student Success, and other campus partners in recruitment and retention efforts of LGBTQ students.

11. Plan and coordinate college wide annual LGBTQ themed events such as National Coming Out Day, Transgender Day of Remembrance, and Rainbow Reception.

12. Recommend curriculum materials, resources guides, exhibits, texts, articles, and other materials that enhance the inclusion of LGBTQ issues as requested in consultation with academic units. Encourage relevant scholarly dialogue in areas of LGBTQ Studies.

13. Lead the budget planning process for the Center and administer its annual budget. Prepare and submit budget recommendations; monitor, verify, and oversee reconciliation of expenditure of budgeted funds. Oversee the purchase and acquisition of capital equipment. Manage center budget.

14. Serve as a member of the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Life Leadership Team attending bi-weekly meetings and leadership team retreats. Assist in setting strategic goals for the division and support divisional assessment efforts. This position reports to The Center for Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, and collaborates with the offices under this umbrella . As part of the role to support and advocate for our LGBTQ community, this position also serves as a Title IX confidential resource for students, faculty and staff.

15. Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Position/Job Qualifications

Required:
Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education administration, social work, counseling, health, sexuality and gender studies, or other related field and a minimum of five years professional experience; and:
  • previous experience in LGBTQ program development and student services at a college, university or community agency
  • demonstrated leadership experience
  • knowledge of and commitment to working with LGBTQ issues through an intersectional lens
  • advanced interpersonal skills, and outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • extensive knowledge about LGBTQ people and themes, and a commitment to educational equity and cultural humility
  • experience creating and implementing successful, innovative, educational programming
  • ability to take initiative, problem solve, exercise sound judgement, manage multiple priorities and work independently, with accuracy, attention to detail, and follow-through.
Work Environment
Most of the work of the incumbent is carried out within a generally accessible, safe, indoor environment. The incumbent will be required to operate a personal computer and associated equipment as well as other office equipment used in day-to-day operations. The incumbent will be required to attend workshops, conferences and meetings on and off campus and during and after normal business hours and must be able to walk or drive or make alternative arrangements.

Hiring Range: $68,000 - $72,000
