Position Function:

The Department of Plant of Plant and Soil Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Mississippi State University is seeking applicants for an Extension (75%)/Teaching (25%) Assistant Professor. This position will be a 12-month, tenure track appointment, located at the Starkville, MS campus with a starting date on or after October 1, 2023. The incumbent will work in concert with faculty and staff from the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Mississippi State University and other departments across campus and other institutions.

Department Profile:

Mississippi State University is Mississippi's senior comprehensive land-grant institution and has the largest on-campus enrollment (>22,000) of the eight state institutions of higher learning. All components of the university have a strong commitment to teaching, research, and service. The Department of Plant and Soil Sciences has 31 on- and 26 off-campus faculty members engaged in teaching, research, and extension and/or service programs, most of who carry joint appointments. The programs are supported by state-of-the-art laboratories, equipment, and trained support and professional staff. The department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Agronomy, Horticulture, or Environmental Sciences in Agricultural Systems, with Master's or Doctoral graduate students concentrating in Agronomy, Horticulture, or Weed Science.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate for this position will develop a nationally recognized extension program in vegetable production. Desirable areas of expertise include program planning and delivery as well as methodologies, tools, techniques, and/or concepts of vegetable production research. The successful candidate will develop and maintain close working relationships with vegetable producers, shippers, processors, and research scientists. Specific stakeholder groups may include: Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation, and other related producer associations. Expectations also include development and execution of demonstrations, field days, and other outreach activities in collaboration with MAFES, USDA, and industry scientists. The scientist will also be expected to seek funding to support his or her program, partner with colleagues in grant and contract proposals seeking funding to support applied outreach and research efforts. This faculty member will maintain working relationships with research faculty, State Specialists and other scientists in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences and other departments as appropriate at Mississippi State University. Regional and multi-state collaboration on outreach projects is also expected.

Teaching responsibilities will include up to two courses per academic year. Active participation in supervising and training graduate students is expected. The successful candidate should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and experience in design, execution, and statistical analyses of field and laboratory research. Demonstrated ability to reach target audiences and publication experience in multiple formats including digital publications and refereed journals is critical. Service to the department, college, university as well as professional societies is expected.

Minimum Qualifications:

Earned Ph.D. in horticulture, plant physiology/ecology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher learning is required. Students who are ABD will be considered. A strong familiarity of vegetable production with modern agricultural practices is preferred. Teaching experience is highly desirable. Applicants must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills are important and the willingness to address issues in a team environment.
