Position Function:

This is a nine-month, non-tenure-track appointment. The successful candidate will teach two or three courses per semester not to exceed six total courses per nine-month period. The instructor will also coordinate the Weather and Climate introductory laboratory sections. The duties include making sure the graduate teaching assistants are prepared to facilitate the labs and preparing laboratory instructions and materials. In addition, the instructor will advise freshman and sophomore meteorology majors (broadcasting and professional meteorology majors) and participate in the College academic recruiting events during the fall and spring semesters. Summer advising and teaching opportunities for additional pay may be available, yet summer employment is not always guaranteed.

Department Profile:

The Department of Geosciences currently has 20 tenured and tenure-track faculty, seven clinical professors, and four full-time instructors. Within the department, there are four areas of disciplinary emphasis: Geology, Geography, Geospatial Science, and Atmospheric Science, which offer numerous opportunities for transdisciplinary collaboration focused on the global climate system. The department is closely aligned with several MSU research centers including the Geosystems Research Institute (www.gri.msstate.edu), the High-Performance Computing Collaboratory (www.hpc.msstate.edu), and the Northern Gulf Institute (www.ngi.msstate.edu). Mississippi State University holds the “Very High Research Activity” (R1) designation from the Carnegie Foundation and is ranked in the top 100 for research and development expenditures among all institutions in the National Science Foundation Higher Education Research and Development Survey. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Major duties and responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses and advising undergraduate students.

Minimum Qualifications:

An M.S. degree in meteorology, geography, or related field. Demonstration, evidence, and commitment to excellence in teaching. Background knowledge of meteorology.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least two years teaching experience. Experience teaching introductory weather courses.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Commitment to high quality teaching and strong communication skills including writing and public speaking. Ability to work effectively with students in a classroom environment. Ability to use modern computer hardware and software in delivering instruction.

The ability to provide academic leadership. Commitment to working with and encouraging diversity. Effective interpersonal skills to interact with, engage and inspire students, faculty, staff and others. Effective organization and administrative skills.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

The successful candidate must be able to teach in a classroom setting and conduct service in the profession.
