Summary of Job Duties:The Department of Art and Design seeks a committed educator with a demonstrated ability to teach broadly throughout a generalist Graphic Design curriculum. Candidates should have knowledge of a diverse range of approaches in the field of graphic design. Successful candidates will have emphasis in typography, branding, publication design, and/or emerging technologies. Candidates with interest in collaboration between Graphic Design and the Department’s other disciplines will be viewed favorably; such disciplinary areas include Book Arts, Letterpress, Printmaking, Drawing & Painting, and Art History.

This position will be assigned courses in lower- and upper-level Graphic Design and relevant Foundations courses. The appointment includes a 3/2 teaching load, maintenance of scholarship/creative practice, and service expectations including, but not limited to committee service, student advising, and departmental collaboration. The Art Department at UAFS offers a B.A. in Studio Art, a B.S. in Graphic Design, and minors in Art History and Studio Art. The program holds NASAD accreditation. The B.S. in Graphic Design at UAFS boasts an active alumni network and strong job placement rates. It is housed within the Windgate Art & Design building, home to robust facilities for Design, Book Arts and Letterpress, Printmaking, Digital Photography, Drawing, and Painting.

The position reports to Art Department Head.

Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Work Experience
: Terminal degree in Graphic Design, visual communication preferred; notable equivalent experience may be considered in extraordinary circumstances. Documented creative practice in Design. Qualifying terminal degrees must be complete prior to date of hire.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience: Area of expertise is open; those with interests or training in more than one subject area are preferred. Experience teaching at the college or university level strongly preferred. Preferred research interests include: typography, branding, and/or emerging technologies. Experience with print production and/or digital fabrication will be viewed favorably. Ability to draw curricular connections between Graphic Design and Book Arts, Letterpress, and/or studio art preferred. Membership in professional organizations related to field of expertise is preferred.

Other Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • A commitment to inclusive teaching practices, with specific knowledge of such practices’ implications for pedagogy and professional training in Graphic Design
  • Knowledge of the historical and cultural context with which the candidate’s work and teaching engages.
  • Maintain productive working relationships with students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds
  • Implement a variety of teaching methods, with potential teaching in diverse instructional modalities
  • Contribute to recruitment and retention efforts
  • Collaborate with colleagues and department head to plan, implement, and evaluate curriculum
  • Support student organizations and related activities
  • Attend and participate in an all faculty and administrative meetings, Student Research Symposium, commencement ceremonies, and other meetings/events as required
  • Other duties as assigned.
Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to subordinates. Requires consistent on-time attendance.
