The CMU Cloud Lab is searching for a Business Manager that will manage and advise the administrative and financial functions of the Cloud Lab an auxiliary center in the Mellon College of Science (MCS). The business manager will be part of the management team providing advice and consultation on matters of compliance, policy, administration, and planning. In this position, you will be responsible for developing budgets and supervising performance against the plan, providing financial analysis and reporting. You will advise the business activities our Cloud Lab including budget review and forecasting, procurement, billing, rate setting, hiring, performance management and facilities management.

Your core responsibilities will include:
  • Coordinating the business affairs of the CMU Cloud Lab. Develops and evaluates operating policies and procedures and fiscal controls, business practices and procedures ensuring that they conform to university policies and procedures.
  • Managing the financial and administrative functions including budgeting, human resources, facilities planning, billing, asset management. Collaborates with contacts to facilitate operation of the lab, provide information and reporting.
  • Serves as the primary focal point for CMU for business operations for the Cloud Lab. Works with Emerald Cloud Lab to establish operations, inventory, financial management, staffing, customer development and retention.
  • Performs financial modeling, forecasting and analysis of lab activity.
  • In collaboration with HR and ECL provides oversight of CMU personnel including hiring, performance management, scheduling. Works with ECL to ensure that staffing is available to support research operations.
  • Responsible for the oversight of internal and external billing. Converting data to create monthly bills. Verifies revenue and expense data.
  • Must be able to manage and resolve issues that develop related to lab operations and alert ECL and division management to any issues.
  • Ability to generate a P&L statement, interpret a balance sheet and extract data from various systems for financial analysis, reporting and billing.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, operations, or related field required.
  • Graduate Degree (MBA or similar) preferred.
  • 5+ years of confirmed experience, preferably in higher education, start-up, or manufacturing environment.
  • 5+ years of experience with Oracle or similar tool.
  • Previous experience with Federal grants and proposals a plus.
  • Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Workspace tools; familiarity with Tableau is preferred.
