Assistant/Associate Vice President for Budget and Financial Planning

Old Dominion University (ODU) invites inquiries, nominations and applications for its next Assistant/Associate Vice President for Budget and Financial Planning (AVP).

ODU enjoys an enviable track record of student success, groundbreaking research and incredible service to its community, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and beyond. To build on this record of achievement and create expanded opportunities for current and future generations of Monarchs, the University seeks a collaborative and innovative leader as the assistant/associate vice president for budget and financial planning to work in concert with the vice president of administration and finance, the University's senior leadership team, the entire Division of Administration and Finance, and internal and external university constituents to support ODU in its sharp focus to fulfill its mission, while gaining national and international prominence.

ODU is Virginia's entrepreneurial-minded public doctoral research university with approximately 24,000 students, rigorous academics, an energetic residential community and robust initiatives that contribute $2.6 billion annually to Virginia's economy. The diverse student body includes approximately 49% students of color, nearly 800 international students from 90 countries and 25% military-affiliated students. ODU has also once again been recognized among the region's and nation's top colleges. Students benefit from a 17:1 student-to-faculty ratio and are supported by 901 dedicated and nationally recognized faculty members. In U.S. News & World Report's 2021 "Best College" rankings, ODU maintained its ranking of 126 out of 1,500 public universities. For the second year in a row, ODU also ranked as a top university for social mobility. Recently classified as a Research 1 institution, ODU is also recognized as having top undergraduate business and engineering programs. ODU has over 3,000 faculty and staff employees, with approximately 600 employees within the Division of Administration and Finance.

Reporting directly to the vice president for administration and finance and working in tandem with a myriad of entities both internal and external to the university, the AVP for budget and financial planning will direct the development of the university's $645M operating budget (within the additional financial context of current capital improvement projects total approximately $300M, an institutional endowment of $275M and an annual research volume of approximately $78.3M) by providing oversight, management, development and administrative planning for university budget operations. The AVP will provide strategic direction and leadership to the Office of Planning and Budget that encompasses a team of professionals in financial planning, budget operations and systems and process optimization. Additionally, the AVP will oversee the university's strategic budget modelling process, annual budget development and position control while developing recommendations for budget adjustments based on financial research, analysis and benchmarking.

The AVP will have progressive financial and administrative leadership experience with university and/or public institution budgeting and funding procedures. The AVP will demonstrate vision, flexibility, imagination and excellence in leadership and be naturally collaborative with the exceptional interpersonal and communications skills needed to partner effectively with university leaders, faculty, staff and students, a Board of Visitors and external entities including local, state and federal agencies and community partners. A Master's of Finance, MBA, or Master's degree in a relevant field is required; significant financial and administrative experience in a research university context is preferred.

All applications, nominations, and inquiries are invited. Applications should include, as two separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in the leadership profile.
