Position Announcement
Utah Valley University (UVU) is seeking applicants for a tenure track assistant professor for the Engineering Technology Department. The successful candidate will have industrial experience in programmable logic controllers and industrial automation, power systems, robotics, or mechatronics depending on the department need at time of hire.

The Engineering Technology faculty develops and teaches courses I the AAS and BS programs. The faculty engages in scholarly activities and/or creative works that contribute to the mission of the university, department, and profession. In addition, the faculty provides service at the department, college, and university levels.

The Engineering Technology Department offers an AAS in Automation & Electrical Technology and a BS in Mechatronics Engineering Technology. Graduates work in a variety of electrical and electronic-related fields, such as automatic system design in advanced manufacturing, industrial control networking, automation, semiconductor manufacturing, and power systems.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited institution with a relevant Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of relevant industry experience

Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited institution with a Master's degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, or related field, 5+ years of relevant industry experience, and experience with 2+2 College/University technology programs.

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

  • Solid fundamental knowledge in the areas of electronics or electrical systems that relate to Automation, Power Systems, or Engineering Technology. The successful applicant will have a strong background in at least two of the following areas: Industrial Automation, Power Systems, Power System Protection, Fluid Power, Thermodynamics, Electric Machines
  • Application of logic to troubleshooting and designing electrical and electronic systems
  • Application of electronics, electrical, PLCs, and other devices in the automation, controls, or Power Systems fields.
  • Strong knowledge in the following areas: PLC programming, motion control, and industrial motor control integrating DC and 3 phase/1phase motors in automated systems
  • Advanced knowledge of subject matter of the courses to be taught which include courses in emphasizing both theory and practice. Topics may include PLC's, CNC, Industrial Robots, Sensors, Ladder Logic, HMI, Networking, PID, Vision Systems System Analysis, Motors, Motor Controllers, Pneumatic Systems, Hydraulic Systems, power electronics, power system analysis, or power system protection
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex industrial systems
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques in upper and lower division courses.
  • Knowledge of student management, motivation, evaluation; evaluation of (peer and self) instruction
  • Knowledge of program and curriculum development and evaluation
  • Knowledge of and expertise in current trends in education such as: engaged learning and service learning, learning technologies (e.g., digital technologies for classroom management and distance education), public presenting and report and grant writing
  • Knowledge of online teaching environment, such as Canvas or other course management systems
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong program coordination skills
  • Effective verbal and technical written communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, agency administrators, and community practitioners from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and initiative in solving problems
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to design, build, and troubleshoot industrial electronic or control circuits
  • Ability to design and build new electronic, power system, or electrical automation labs
  • Ability to plan measurable objectives, prepare instructional materials, and follow an approved curriculum
  • Ability to assess student work and maintain and submit accurate and current plans, reports, and records involving student accountability, attendance, and performance
  • Ability to conduct scholarship/creative works and service and have teaching interests that align with the mechatronics field
