Advises veteran students, their spouses and dependents, regarding information, procedures and academic requirements for a specific program or major. Assists students in exploring careers, evaluating academic abilities, and setting goals. Advises veterans, their spouses and dependents of VA and Texas Veterans Commission educational benefits and other resources available. Assists in the application process and certification of educational benefits. Serves as the co-advisor to Veterans Student Organization.

Minimum Education/Training/Experience

Bachelor’s Degree and one (1) year of academic advising experience or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Preferred Education/Training/Experience

Preferred qualifications: Master’s Degree, 2 years academic advising OR experience working with and advising military service members and their families. Previous military service strongly preferred.

  • Use of computers and related software application programs;
  • Interviewing and advising;
  • Interpreting college catalogs, course requirements and program parameters; VA policy and procedure;
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
  • Currently approved as a School Certifying Official with VA, or able to obtain certification within 30 days of hire.

Job Duties

1. Assesses student’s stage of development and promote student growth by assisting student in establishing academic and career goals.
2. Advises students on academic and career issues: identifies the educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists with the analysis of each option. Sets up an action plan for students to explore alternative careers and related majors.
3. Identifies options for student to satisfy degree requirements; evaluates and makes recommendations on amendments/changes to student’s program of study; assists students in completion.
4. Review academic / military transcripts to ensure proper credit(s) has been accepted or awarded via course substitution or military experience if approved by program chair.
5. Monitors academic progress of students; determines eligibility and satisfactory progress towards degree; identifies current and potential needs or problem areas; refers student to appropriate campus resources for assistance. Involvement in the Early Warning Program and student retention efforts.
6. Maintains student files and records.
7. Interprets and explains College and VA policies and procedures. Assists with certifying educational benefits and reporting satisfactory academic progress to the VA as needed.
8. Assists in recruitment of potential students by advising them of academic requirements; describes courses. Provides information regarding VA and Texas Veterans Commission Educational Benefits and eligibility, and other available resources.
9. Collaborates with military entities to develop or replicate the streamlined programs that translate military experience, education and training into civilian credentials.
10. Assists students with admission and registration; provides guidance in course selection in keeping with student’s interests and abilities. Application process of VA Benefits, Financial Aid and Scholarships.

11. Certify benefits to VA and TVC, and update as needed.
12. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
