POSITION PURPOSE

The principal responsibility of the Instructional and Learning Technology Support Specialist is to work with and support the fundamental technology needs of faculty in their respective academic departments. This position supports the augmenting and enhancing of instruction and learning through technology, for both students and faculty, by carrying out key operations. As a member of the Instructional and Learning Technology (ILT) group of Whitman College Technology Services (WCTS), this position collaborates with other IT members to provide an information technology environment that is consistent with the goals and needs of Whitman College students, faculty, and staff.

HIRING SALARY RANGE

Successful applicants can expect to start between $54,000 and $57,000

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Perform preparations, deployment, and record keeping of technology- especially computer lifecycle allocations- for faculty members.
  • Collaborate with other WCTS staff members to help faculty by answering/addressing technology support requests and assisting in routine technology maintenance as needed. This includes but is not limited to software installations and issues, LMS (Canvas) support, hardware interoperability issues with peripherals, and classroom technology support.
  • Assist Instructional and Learning Technologists with projects that enhance, augment, and support the effective and/or innovative applications of technology to meet faculty members' pedagogical and scholarly pursuits.
  • Assist other ILT staff members with computer lab equipment deployment and maintenance.
  • Collaborate with other WCTS staff members in preparing and disseminating information (e.g. documentation, handouts, newsletter) regarding WCTS services.
  • Provide auxiliary assistance to Client Services' desktop and application support.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

The following attributes are not mandatory, but we hope for as many of these as possible in the ideal candidate:

  • Proficiency with Windows, Mac OS, and mobile operating systems (iOS, Android, etc). Knowledge of Linux and/or Unix is a plus.
  • Experience supporting and using any or all of the following:
    • Learning Management Systems (e.g. Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle).
    • Multimedia applications for presentation/publication, graphics, audio, video, digitization of analog materials, and social media interaction.
    • Data management and visualization applications (e.g. SAS, SPSS, R, FileMaker Pro, SQL,NVivo, Reference/Bibliographic Data Management applications, GIS applications, Digital Asset Management applications).
    • Applications for scientific study and research (e.g. Mathematica, ChemDraw, Matlab, Anaconda)
    • Operating system interaction via command line interfaces and/or scripting (e.g. Bash, PowerShell).
  • Passion for and dedication to the role of instructional and learning technologies in higher education.
  • The ability to match technical opportunities to college goals.
  • Marked ability to work alone and in teams.
  • A proven ability to translate challenges into opportunities and work comfortably in a changing, multi-tasked, and sometimes ambiguous environment.
  • Demonstrated excellence in visual and media communication and composition.
  • Valuation and understanding of the benefits of failure.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree AND/OR equivalent combination in education and related experience/work in technology.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree or advanced degree with an emphasis/major in education, technology, instructional design or related field.
  • Experience working in an educational environment.
