Job Description
The Battalion (BN) Senior Enlisted Advisor (SEA) is the primary enlisted mentor and training Noncommissioned Officer (NCO) for each respective BN. The SEA reports to the respective BN Deputy Commandant. This position is essential in the mentorship and development of our Nation’s future leaders. The SEA provides direct daily leadership, instruction, counseling, and oversight to over 300 full-time cadets (primarily sophomore & junior-level students) in their respective BN. Additionally, the SEA provides solicited and unsolicited advice to the BN Deputy Commandant on tactical to strategic matters that affect organizational culture and operations.
Core Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement programs and services to achieve the VTCC's mission to graduate leaders of character who are instilled with the values and skills essential for leadership success in service to the nation.
• Coach, teach, and mentor on the fundamentals of military leadership, ethics, discipline, counseling and evaluations, or other topics as assigned.
• Work with the Deputy Commandant to oversee supervision, professional development, and training of assigned cadet leaders and staffs.
• Collaborate daily with an all-service/civilian staff to fulfill the Institution’s vision according to the Commandant of Cadets’ intent.
• Participate in regular VTCC formations to include marching, parades, and milestone training events (e.g. reveille, homecoming parade, home football games, Caldwell March).
• Work directly with upperclassman Cadet NCOs to instill and develop an understanding of the proper roles and functions of NCOs within a military organization.
• Provide counseling and referral for individual cadets and staff when needed.
• Guide student development in skills required for leadership success, academic excellence, cultural awareness, self-responsibility, and social interaction.
• Serve as VTCC Staff POC and advisor/mentor to various cadet-led organizations (e.g. Obstacle Course, Rappelling Tower, Armory).
• Provide leadership in the coordination, planning, and execution of field training type events and activities; conferences, meetings, exercises, special events, and projects as assigned.
• Assist the Deputy Commandant with the administration of the VTCC disciplinary system
• Ensure compliance with state and university policies in department operations.
• Develop general knowledge of all departmental functions and processes in order to serve as resource to others or to act in place of the Deputy Commandant as required or directed.
• Lead professional and student staff in developing supportive and multicultural environments through community development and educational programming.
• Serve on assigned departmental and university committees and participate in other professional development opportunities.
• Cultivate on and off-campus relationships and partnering efforts that facilitate the achievement of institutional goals and objectives.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
• Military experience as a Senior NCO in the grade of E7, E8, or E9
- Significant experience with mentorship and counseling
- Significant experience with drill & ceremony, parade activities, inspections, and Field Training Exercises (FTX)
• Bachelor's degree and/or commensurate training experience
• A demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
• Strong written and verbal communications skills
• Experience in facilitating, instructing, teaching, and presenting
• Experience in the effective supervision of staff and students
• Collaborative work style
• Ability to work effectively with all university constituents
Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree
• Recent active duty service (i.e. last 5 years)
• Prior experience with a federal service academy and/or military college/school
• Previous experience with an ROTC program and/or VTCC graduates
• Experience working in a structured recruit or officer training program
