Stationary Engineer
About the Opportunity
Under the direction of the Chief Engineer this position is responsible for performing journey-level mechanical work in repairing, inspection, servicing and altering plumbing, heating, ventilating, and related equipment, including preventative maintenance and urgent repairs.
Duties include:
- Executes assigned work orders in an accurate and timely
fashion. Records completion in facilities work order
system
- Services, maintains and repairs plumbing, heating, and
ventilation equipment, including but not limited to domestic water
and sewer systems, domestic hot water heaters, steam and hot water
boilers, air handlers, pumps and forced air furnaces.
- Assists in repair and maintenance of underground utility
systems, including irrigation water and storm drains.
- Conducts daily inspections of the steam boilers and makes
repairs to related systems; assure proper equipment
operation.
- Locates and acquires parts necessary for repair or
maintenance.
- Performs maintenance and repair to related electrical and
mechanical controls and piping systems; diagnoses mechanical and
electrical problems.
- Cleans and adjusts pilots; repairs pipes, changes filters,
inspects and replaces V-belts.
- Test water samples and adjust chemical feeding equipment for
proper water treatment of the boilers.
- Operates a variety of tools and power equipment including
electrical, plumbing and related equipment.
- Maintains and repairs the Campanil clock and related parts and
equipment.
- Maintains swimming pool equipment in conjunction with the pool
service company.
- Maintains electrical generators in conjunction with the
generator service company.
- Maintains lake water pumping station used for campus
irrigation.
- Maintains lighting fixture replacement and
restocking.
- May work closely with electrician to assist in any electrical
installations and repair.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Any combination equivalent to:five years of training through a
formal apprenticeship program offered by the I.U.O.E. and its local
unions, or a trade or technical school; or on the job/ in-field
working experience which demonstrates journey-men level skill in
plumbing, heating and electrical maintenance. A valid California
driver's license and safe driving record
- Read, write and speak English fluently
- Understanding of boiler operation and control principles, such
as combustion controls, relays, aquastat pressure switches and
related equipment.
- Able to read blueprints, shop drawings and sketches
- Understanding of motor and pump mechanics
- Tools and equipment of the trade
- Work independently with little direction.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Plan and organize work.
- Able to work under stressful conditions, as it relates to
making emergency repairs to utilities lines and equipment that is
vital to campus life.
- Customer service orientation
ENVIRONMENT:
- Working in indoor and outdoor locations. Seasonal heat and cold
or adverse weather conditions
- Work around loud and hot equipment.
- Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
- Working at heights.
- Working with boiler chemicals.
- Frequent interruptions and changes to the work
schedule.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
- Lifting, pulling and pushing heavy objects (50 lbs).
- May be in close quarters, high or precarious places, including
ladders and scaffolding
- Frequent walking, standing, climbing, lifting, stooping or
carrying of equipment, tools and materials.
- Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and
horizontally.
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized tools and
equipment
The starting salary is $62.26/hour.
