DEPARTMENT/COLLEGE SUMMARY:

Student Health and Counseling Services is a fully integrated health care/wellness facility. The sports psychologist in this position will work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes Primary Care, Sports Medicine, Athletic Training, Pharmacy, Nutrition Services, Health and Wellness Services and the Athletics Department.

POSITION DETAILS:

Under the supervision of the Director of Counseling, with a dotted line to the Associate AD, Sports Medicine, the Sports Psychologist will provide a full range of culturally sensitive clinical and non-clinical services for D1 student-athletes at California State University, Sacramento. Clinical services will include assessment/evaluation, short-term individual and relationship counseling, group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, case management, and psycho-educational workshops to increase the mental health awareness of student athletes.

In addition to direct clinical services, the sports psychologist will provide applied sports psychology services related to enhancing athletic performance. This will involve collaboration and consultation with coaches, athletic training staff, physicians, and Associate AD, Sports Medicine. Involvement with the Athletics Department culture by supporting student athletes and coaches through practices, games and events.

Anticipated salary is $7,102 - $7,800 per month.

JOB DUTIES:

Direct Counseling/Clinical Services

Provide direct clinical services including: assessment/diagnosis, short-term individual and relationship counseling, group psychotherapy, crisis intervention and follow-up, and case management; collaboration with sport medicine physician, primary care physicians, psychiatrists, NP's, and other medical providers to provide comprehensive care. This position will not include the provision of tele-mental health services and/or remote work. Counseling should be expected to be on campus, unless athlete is traveling with team and telehealth is necessary for appointments.

Outreach and Program Development

Incumbent is expected to develop and implement programs including: presentations, workshops, prevention projects, seminars, mental health screenings and other non-clinical services. Implement and develop support groups for teams and specific student athlete populations. Meet with coaches, teams and relevant groups. Lead and or organize annual suicide prevention trainings for sports medicine and athletics department.

Consultation

Provide consultative expertise to members of the athletic community, including issues that affect the mental health and psychological well-being of student athletes, as well as emotional/mental health concerns that may impact athletic performance. Provide consultation and occasional in-service training to coaches, faculty, administrators, and student leaders on psychological/social issues effecting student athletes.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Credentials
  1. Ph.D. or Psy.D in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA accredited program or Master's Degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology or related field.
  2. Supervised internship experience (minimum 1 year of work equivalent) in university counseling center, mental health agency or related professional setting, with ability to support the mental health, well-being, and academic success of students.
  3. Licensed or license eligible as a psychologist in CA. Licensure expected within one year of hire.
  4. CMPC- Certified as a Mental Performance Consultant through the Associate of Applied Sport Psychology or actively working toward certification

Clinical Skills
  • Experience providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning within a brief therapy model.
  • Demonstrated experience providing individual and group therapy.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with BIPOC clients.
  • Demonstrated experience working with specific needs of collegiate student-athletes and consulting with sports medicine professionals and other athletics staff members.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in providing clinical services and support to underrepresented and marginalized populations, including students with diverse identities based on ethnicity, race, gender identity, sexual preference, disability, religion, and socio-economic status.
  • Experience working with high-risk clients.
  • Experience providing crisis intervention.
  • Experience providing mental health counseling and sports performance enhancement services to NCAA Division I student-athletes, preferable in university or college counseling center setting.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team of athletic, mental health, and primary care providers within an integrated health care facility.
  • Commitment to maintaining professional ethics and boundaries in multiple settings/situations.

  • Experience working with electronic medical records systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Experience providing sports psychology services at the university level.
  2. Degree in sports psychology or degree focus in sports psychology.
  3. Certification as a Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association of Applied Sport Psychology or actively working toward certification.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of NCAA rules and guidelines.
  5. Experience working with students with diverse and intersecting identities and backgrounds.

OTHER SPECIFICS ABOUT THE POSITION:
This appointment is a full-time, temporary 12-month position in the Student Services Professional-Academic Related 2 classification. This is not a probationary position and does not establish consideration for subsequent appointments or any further appointment rights. However, this appointment may be renewed annually dependent upon satisfactory performance and program needs. The position will accrue vacation credit at the rate of 16 hours per month.
