Position requires familiarity with academic advising and policy issues as well as understanding of broad curricular issues for undergraduate, college-level education.  It is vital that applicants have a working understanding of transfer student concerns (through employment, committees, own academic background, etc.).  Position requires advanced communication and time management skills. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  1. Serves as primary point person regarding the processes and issues involved in the transfer from the UH System Community Colleges to Mānoa.
  2. Ensures that transfer students communicate to the appropriate advisors, resources, and services. 
  3. Oversees the transfer process and advising students to resolve the transfer of credits, articulation issues, and program requirements.
  4. Develops programs based upon the needs of the transfer students and campus-based programs.  
  5. Administers all aspects of the Kaʻieʻie Degree Pathway Program.
  6. Serves as UHM’s liaison to counselors/advisors at other UH campuses, maintains transfer websites, and manages data on transfer students.
  7. Assists in planning, implementing and managing services for transfer students.
  8. Evening and/or off-campus assignments are a required part of this position.
  9. The transfer specialists will have an assignment to work both at a UH Community College campus (Honolulu Community College, Kapiʻolani Community College, Leeward Community College, Windward Community College, Kauai Community College, Hawaii Community College) and the Mānoa Transfer Coordination Center at UH Manoa.
  10. Advise students on curricular requirements, academic options, policies and procedures
  11. Teach courses, workshops, and/or seminars in the department
  12. Advise students in formulating and assessing academic and career goals
  13. Develop and implement group sessions and workshops
  14. Provide ideas and initiatives in the development and evaluation of academic advising policies and procedures
  15. Keep abreast of peer and benchmark practices and standards in advising; participate in regional/national discussions
  16. Write a variety of correspondence and program descriptions and proposals
  17. Lead changes in policies and procedure for advising based upon national trends
  18. Maintain a research/scholarly profile related to academic advising as a profession
  19. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:                    

JUNIOR SPECIALIST                                   

  1. Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Student Affairs, or any other field that is related to the duties of the position from a college or university of recognized standing.
  2. Minimum one year of academic advising experience or equivalent related experience. 
  3. Knowledge of post-secondary curricula and academic requirements. 
  4. Familiarity with current research and concerns regarding transfer students. 
  5. Knowledge of retention and graduation issues in higher education. 
  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a culturally sensitive manner with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds.
  7. Knowledge of advising models. 
  8. Demonstrated ability to facilitate groups and give presentations. 
  9. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with university students, staff, faculty, and administration.
  10. Must have strong computer skills, including Internet, email and word processing. 
  11. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. 
  12. Strong organizational skills. Familiarity with spreadsheet software.
  13. Ability to design and implement programs and initiatives.
  14. Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and see tasks to completion. 
  15. Ability to work with others in a team environment.  
  16. Ability to uphold established policies and procedures. 
  17. Ability to travel independently to various UH campuses in a timely manner.
  18. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid driver’s license or other means of transportation which meets position needs.


  1. Same as Junior Specialist level, as well as:
  2. A Master's degree and, in addition to the Master's degree, 30 credits of graduate study in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Student Affairs, or any other field that is related to the duties of the position from a college or university of recognized standing 
  3. At least three (3) years of experience in academic advising experience at the next lower rank, or its equivalent.


  1. Same as Assistant Specialist level, as well as:
  2. Doctorate degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Student Affairs, or any other field that is related to the duties of the position from a college or university of recognized standing.
  3. At least four (4) years of experience in academic advising at the next lower rank with demonstrated increasing professional maturity, including at least two (2) years of experience directly related to the current job assignment; 
  4. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, including the work of assistants when appropriate;
  5. Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and administrators as necessary

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Knowledge of university-wide academic programs. 
  2. Knowledge of community college programs. 
  3. Familiarity with the Kaʻieʻie Pathway Program.   
  4. Commitment to working with a diverse multicultural student body, including awareness of UHM’s goal to become a Hawaiian Place of Learning. 
  5. Interest in working with transfer students.
  6. One or more years of demonstrated experience in a managerial, coordinative / supervisory position. 
  7. One year of teaching experience in an institution of higher education.
  8. One year of research and assessment experience at an accredited institution of higher education.
