Position Summary
Assistant Professor - Tenure Track
Jazz Studies and Applied Trombone

Primary Responsibilities

• Directs the Jazz Studies program
• Teaches undergraduate courses in applied trombone study and perform in jazz/commercial and classical styles
• Teaches undergraduate courses in Jazz History, Jazz Theory, Improvisation, and Jazz Appreciation
• Leads a vibrant jazz program and conduct jazz bands and combos including the annual collaborative Big Band Holiday Jukebox concerts
• Manages all aspects of an annual Jazz Festival, including planning, marketing, budget, guest artist selection, adjudicator selection, and clinics for high school bands and directors
• Recruits and retains trombone majors
• Maintains an active professional profile through creative activity or research
• Advises and mentors undergraduate students
• Serves as a liaison and resource to public school music teachers in region
• Serves on university, college, and department level committees

Required Qualifications

Earned doctorate in Trombone Performance, Jazz Studies, or Jazz Performance or directly related field (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government certified university.)

Demonstrated evidence of exemplary trombone performance ability in jazz/commercial and classical styles

Demonstrated evidence of visionary leadership in managing and expanding an innovative jazz program

Demonstrated interest and experience in jazz and commercial music program development

Demonstrated ability to teach courses in the Jazz Studies minor

Demonstrated experience incorporating appropriate technologies (1:1 devices, audio, audio-visual, web-based) in courses

Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrated commitment to participation in professional organizations and mentoring students through such organizations

Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community
