Assistant Professor - Tenure Track
Jazz Studies and Applied Trombone
Department of Music
Holland College of Arts and Media

Primary Responsibilities

  • Directs the Jazz Studies program
  • Teaches undergraduate courses in applied trombone study and perform in jazz/commercial and classical styles
  • Teaches undergraduate courses in Jazz History, Jazz Theory, Improvisation, and Jazz Appreciation
  • Leads a vibrant jazz program and conduct jazz bands and combos including the annual collaborative Big Band Holiday Jukebox concerts
  • Manages all aspects of an annual Jazz Festival, including planning, marketing, budget, guest artist selection, adjudicator selection, and clinics for high school bands and directors
  • Recruits and retains trombone majors
  • Maintains an active professional profile through creative activity or research
  • Advises and mentors undergraduate students
  • Serves as a liaison and resource to public school music teachers in region
  • Serves on university, college, and department level committees


Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in Trombone Performance, Jazz Studies, or Jazz Performance or directly related field (Degree must be from a regionally accredited or internationally accredited/government certified university.)
  • Demonstrated evidence of exemplary trombone performance ability in jazz/commercial and classical styles
  • Demonstrated evidence of visionary leadership in managing and expanding an innovative jazz program
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in jazz and commercial music program development
  • Demonstrated ability to teach courses in the Jazz Studies minor
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating appropriate technologies (1:1 devices, audio, audio-visual, web-based) in courses
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to participation in professional organizations and mentoring students through such organizations
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality when interacting with others within the University community
