The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMNNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) with specialized, advanced education and clinical competency to provide behavioral health care for a diverse population in a university health setting. This position serves as a representative of the University, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, and discretion in all interactions with the Counseling Center team members, students and others in the University. The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner must be certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a PMHNP and have an unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse and an APRN in the state of Tennessee. Additionally, this person must be eligible to hold an unrestricted DEA license.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Patient Care

Provide psychiatric services to currently enrolled university students during scheduled hours, the scope of services includes outpatient psychiatric evaluations, counseling and medication management services; assess, diagnose, and treat students experiencing symptoms of a behavioral health disorders, provide psychotherapy when appropriate; prescribe, recommend, or discontinue drugs and treatments to treat mental, emotional, or behavioral disorders in accordance with the collaborating physician and the TN Board of Nursing; design/participate in the development of individualized treatment plans, incorporating evidence based practices into treatment interventions making appropriate referrals when needed; responsible for timely and accurate completion of medical records, including assessment, treatment plan, progress notes, and outcome measures in the Electronic Medical Record; maintain medical records and submit at least 20% of records to the supervising Psychiatrist for monthly review.

Diagnostics and Treatment

Order and interpret laboratory/diagnostic tests for screening, and continuity of care working with University Health Services to obtain lab/diagnostic results; engage in follow up assessments addressing the response to interventions and revises as necessary to achieve optimum results; initiate and maintain follow-up for patients of concern; obtain informed consent from patients as appropriate and necessary.

Collaboration

Consult with case management in the Counseling Center, University Health Services or the Dean of Students' Office as well as staff counselors, case managers to coordinate client care; participate in development of pertinent health education and clinical practice guidelines materials; participate in patient chart audits for quality improvement purposes; participate in regular provider meetings to work on improved methods of health care delivery; may be asked to serve as a guest lecturer for University courses, in-service meetings.

Quality Assurance and Professional Development

Utilize the electronic health record system, internet and current written literature, along with formal continuing education programs for the most up to date information on patient problems; participate in patient chart audits for quality improvement purposes; recommend, develop and implement pertinent policies and procedures to assure quality patient care; participate in University committees as needed (e.g. BIT, CARE) in order to optimize patient health care; initiate and participate in research studies and projects as appropriate; provide information during orientation and other mental health presentations on campus when requested; participate in development of pertinent health education and clinical practice guidelines materials; participate in regular provider meetings to work on improved methods of health care delivery; provide appropriate input at UHS staff meetings when requested; maintain national PMHNP certification and RN licensure by obtaining required continuing education; participate in continuing education offerings to update and improve health care knowledge and skill levels; perform other duties as requested by the Director of the Counseling Center.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Experience in delivering high-quality, client-centered care.
  • Must be able to document and navigate EHR independently.
  • Ability to maintain strict client confidentiality but effectively communicate and interact with individuals involved in all aspects of programming.
  • Ability to work effectively on multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficient computer skills, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general and professional documents.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations.
  • Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

Minimum Qualifications: Masters degree; two years recent practice as PMHN; experience in a secondary or higher education setting working with students’ academic needs ; has an unrestricted license to practice as an RN and an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) in the state of TN; Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by ANCC; current DEA certification.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience managing college students who may have a variety of substance use issues.
