SYSTEM PROVOST AND PRESIDENT OF THE RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Chancellor John B. King, Jr. and the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York (SUNY) invite nominations and applications for an experienced, forward-thinking visionary to serve as System Provost and President of the Research Foundation (SPPRF) of the State University of New York, the nation's largest comprehensive public university system. The Governor’s agenda is to ensure SUNY is the best system of public higher education in the nation. Specific goals are to secure SUNY’s place as a globally recognized higher education institution; expand SUNY’s global reach in research and innovation; become the State’s engine for economic development; support students on the path to economic success and upward mobility; and focus on equity so that students can thrive no matter their background. No other state can match New York's civic resolve, the financial resources, and the unwavering commitment to investing in and supporting higher education as a public good.

The State University of New York is an educational powerhouse, boasting 64 institutions, a mix of 29 State-operated campuses and five statutory colleges -- including research universities, liberal arts colleges, specialized and technical colleges, health science centers, and land-grand colleges – and 30 community colleges. One out of three New York State high school graduates chooses SUNY, and the total enrollment of nearly 363,650 full- and part-time students represents 31% of New York State's higher education students population. SUNY employs 87,000 faculty and staff and counts more than three million living alumni who reside in New York State and throughout the world.

About the SUNY Research Foundation:
The Research Foundation of SUNY ("Research Foundation"), the largest comprehensive university-connected research foundation in the country, provides essential administrative services that enable SUNY faculty to focus their efforts on educating students and performing life-changing research across a wide range of disciplines including Artificial Intelligence, Clean Energy, Biotechnology, Longevity, Substance Addiction, Nextgen Quantum Computing, Environmental Health, and Resiliency. The Research Foundation works with the academic and business leadership of SUNY campuses to facilitate research and discovery by administering sponsored projects and delivering intellectual property and technology transfer services that fuel innovation and move ideas and inventions to the marketplace. The Research Foundation is a private non-profit education corporation that is tax-exempt under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c) (3).

The Position:
This is an exciting time to come to SUNY, and under the leadership of Chancellor John King, the SPPRF will join a highly collaborative team working to advance policy and achieve the Chancellor’s strategic academic and research priorities. Reporting jointly to the SUNY Chancellor and the Research Foundation Board of Directors, the SPPRF is expected to play an active leadership role in supporting the Chancellor, the SUNY Board of Trustees, and the Research Foundation Board of Directors to implement the Governor's bold agenda for a reimagined SUNY and the diverse portfolio of institutions that it represents. This role will require a close partnership with the Chancellor to elevate the academic strength and reach of the entire University. Leadership of the Research Foundation will also be central to this imperative. In this unique role, the SPPRF will establish an environment that leverages and develops existing academic and research partnerships while simultaneously identifying and cultivating promising areas for new academic and research partnerships.

The successful candidate will be a pioneering, entrepreneurial leader and eminent scholar, committed to equity, fairness, and the virtues of diversity that help define the University's next chapter. The SPPRF is expected to be a distinguished scholar and proven administrative leader who shares a deep commitment to and responsibility for SUNY's mission to serve as an engine for the economic and social mobility of its students, particularly those from modest backgrounds.

Required Education and Experience:
Eminence as a scholar, researcher, and teacher and an earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree from an accredited institution are required, as is a significant track record of successful leadership in higher education and/or a research institution with evidenced based outcomes.

In addition, the ideal candidate will also demonstrate most, if not all, of the following professional qualifications and personal qualities.

• Strategic, dynamic vision and commitment to the SUNY mission;
• Compelling and convincing collaborator able to harness the power of multiple champions for the SUNY mission;
• Deep understanding of research and innovation;
• Strength in academic and research administration and management;
• Exceptional advocate for SUNY's interests among external stakeholders;
• A deep commitment to student success and a broad understanding of student affairs; and
• A collegial, accessible, and empathic character.
