The Software and Reporting Services Department is seeking a Slate IT Analyst (Sr. Programmer Analyst) who will take a leading role in the design, configuration strategy, development, and overall management of academic and administrative software systems for the Carey Business School, including, but not limited to, technical expertise for the Slate admissions software by Technolutions. This position is responsible for maintaining a thorough understanding of the functional needs of the Carey Admissions department and how the Slate software platform can be configured to address those needs. This role is also responsible for developing a thorough understanding of the complex interdependencies of the different software and systems that work with Slate, and will be required to identify risks related to these interdependencies and recommend adequate changes to the business requirements.

The Slate platform is shared by all nine Johns Hopkins graduate schools and primarily maintained by the university Central IT team (UIS). This position will therefore serve as the primary technical liaison with the UIS’ Slate team to facilitate/recommend/advocate/lead in the implementation of new processes as well as the development of future related technological tools and systems. This position will support data collection and conduct reporting. The ideal candidate will manage projects and work on systems and processes that have a direct impact on the financial and strategic goals of the school.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Applications Software Development and Support (45%)

  • Lead the planning, configuration strategy, development, implementation and support of centrally-managed and local systems which support the mission of the Carey Business School and the university.
  • Interact with functional users within the school – understanding business processes and helping to ensure our systems meet their needs, communicating new enhancement/what to expect with system upgrades in non-technical terms, documenting and training end-users on proper data entry procedures.
  • Apply extensive knowledge of the Slate Platform to recommend and implement appropriate solutions to various business needs of the Admissions department and others.
  • Work at the highest programming/analytical level, demonstrating proficiency in database management systems and software systems administration.
  • Identify and resolve problems independently, including hardware configuration problems, software configuration problems, and problems with internally developed applications.
  • Design, develop and support system interfaces
  • Provide guidance and training to less-experienced IT staff on a regular basis. Will need to guide technical team members assigned to their project and monitor the team to make sure the milestones are reached in accordance to the plan. This position will also serve as a technical mentor for other members of the technical team assigned to the support of the same system(s). This position is expected to provide feedback on how to improve their technical skills and recommendations on how to further develop them.
  • Evaluate existing applications; recommend actions, code and implement modifications/upgrade as needed.
  • Clearly document requirements, development plans and outcomes (training documentation for end users as well as support documentation for internal Carey IT as well as functional staff)
  • Implement industry standards and appropriate methodology for programming/application development and IT project management, including information technology problem definition and resolution and the formulation of procedures and accountability controls as they relate to the functional areas under study.

Data Collection, Storage and Reporting (35%)

  • Analyze requirements, design, code, test and put into production SQL Reporting Services reports and corresponding SQL queries
  • Design and create user reports using a variety of tools, including Tableau, Power BI and MS Excel
  • Work in conjunction with functional representatives to develop back-end data queries to satisfy ad-hoc requests for information regarding the school
  • Assure quality and integrity of data collected and reports generated
  • Design and create standardized datasets for use in ad hoc queries and other reporting needs
  • Create and maintain policies and procedures for consistent methods for querying data and ensuring the highest performance on all databases

Project Administration (20%)

  • Lead software development projects (defining and managing system scope, objectives, risks, tasks, responsibilities, timelines, status reports, training needs and documentation) and indirectly manage cross-functional staff and deliverables to meet project goals, school objectives and re-engineer and/or streamline processes and procedures.
  • Analyze, propose and manage upgrades and/or replacements of existing database technologies, identifying costs, organizational impacts and training needs.
  • Work with software vendors – identifying software enhancements, testing vendor-supplied solutions, understanding new enhancements/what to expect with system upgrades
  • Create and/or oversee complete technical documentation for all systems supported to ensure that newly hired staff can follow any project with little or no previous knowledge.
  • Provide consulting services within Carey regarding development of unit-specific software systems. Conduct needs assessments when appropriate. Oversee, coordinate and assist staff with the development and management of such databases/systems.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university required. Additional experience may be substituted for education to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
  • Three years of experience in configuring, developing, and implementing functional requirements within the Slate platform; preferably for an admissions department within Higher Education. Additional education may substitute for required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with student information systems and/or university administrative systems.
  • Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services, Visual Studio, SQL queries, views and stored procedure.
  • Experience with reporting software or tools such Tableau, Power BI or similar.
  • Experience with project management software and task management tool.
  • Experience with web technologies.

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:

  • Knowledge of information technology and computing applications, preferably as implemented in higher education.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to independently analyze and resolve complex problems is required.
  • Must work effectively in a team environment.
  • Must be able to manage multiple priorities and meet accelerated timelines.
  • Must possess adequate leadership skills in order to lead and facilitate data design and enhancements efforts.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits or 18 graduate degree credits = 1 year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
