Graphic Designer



The VCU Center on Society and Health (CSH) is looking for an hourly, part-time Graphic Designer with an emphasis on data visualization to join our team. This role will be embedded in a small team that supports CSH’s strategic communication mission. The Graphic Designer will create designs and provide design support for a variety of public-facing content, including reports, maps, and other collateral and data visualizations.

The Graphic Designer will help with the design and production of intermediary and final deliverables for an array of clients. Work will include developing style guides, design systems, and prototypes in line with the project goals, producing materials from concept through completion, interacting with printers, web developers, and other production staff/vendors as needed, and creating products with differing degrees of design flexibility.

Position Responsibilities:

- Ensure deliverables meet business requirements and adhere to design best practices
- Develop and present prototypes, style guides, and thoughtfully crafted design assets to clients
- Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including UX designers, developers, project managers, and content writers, to deliver the strongest solution possible
- Turn data into compelling storytelling through visualization
- Create beautiful visualizations that support project goals and text content
- Review project summaries and participate in client calls and planning sessions
- Additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

- At least 2 years of professional working experience as a graphic designer.
- Design craft: a strong visual design skillset, including a strong foundation in editorial design, data visualization, typography, iconography, and brand identity
- A knowledge of inclusive design principles, an understanding of key equity concepts as they relate to U.S. communities, and experience working with diverse project partners
- An online portfolio or other examples of visual design work, including data visualizations
- Proficiency in in Adobe Creative Cloud software, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
- Experience in physical production, including printing
- A willingness and ability to effectively collaborate online with teammates, using tools such as Google Drive and monday.com (which you can learn on the job as needed)
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

- A bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a design-related field, or equivalent work experience showing aptitude in visual design
- Proximity to the Richmond, VA metro area, so you can join us for weekly in-person team meetings and other on-site meetings as needed. (We’ll also consider candidates living outside the Richmond area who are available during regular business hours in the Eastern Standard Time zone for team communication.)
- Familiarity with public health, behavioral health, and/or social determinants of health and public health subject matter.
- Working knowledge of mapping software such as ArcGIS

This position will remain open until filled.

This is a restricted position with no set end date and continued employment is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.
