Postdoctoral Research Associate

About the Opportunity

The Laboratory for Movement Neuroscience, directed by Eugene Tunik in the Department of Physical Therapy, Movement, and Rehabilitation Science at Northeastern University, is recruiting 1-2 highly motivated individuals with expertise in bioengineering and physiological signal processing for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate. This position is for someone with strong technical / quantitative / engineering skills. Dr. Tunik's research studies the neurobehavioral basis of healthy motor control and learning, the breakdown of motor control with neurological injury and disease, and the development of innovative restorative therapies. His research utilizes cutting edge technologies for behavioral and neurophysiological measurement in awake behaving humans. These technologies include virtual reality with an integrated Phantom 1.5 Premium manipulandum, motion capture, noninvasive brain stimulation (electrical and magnetic) including a newly purchased controllable pulse TMS with compatible EEG, EMG, peripheral stimulation. State of the art 3T-MRI scanning facilities are available at the university. A new Brain Stimulation-Modeling Center is also being established and will be closely linked to the Movement Neuroscience Lab for seamless collaboration.

Current funded projects on which the candidate may focus include investigation of frontoparietal circuits in reach to grasp, human-robot/computer interactions, the development of non-invasive stimulation based biomarkers of neurological disease, studies of neuromotor organization / control, cognitive-motor interactions, and other related work. Additional collaborations with neighboring labs in computational modeling, motor control, neural engineering are available and will be encouraged. Collaborations with the newly established Institute for Experiential AI (for which Dr. Tunik serves as the Director of AI+Health & Wellness initiatives) are also available and encouraged.

The primary responsibilities of this position entail the design, collection, and analysis of human behavior and neurophysiology, including neuronavigated TMS-EEG/EMG, multi-modal kinematics and kinetics, eye-tracking, and MRI. This includes the engineering and development of innovative experimental paradigms and analyses. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will also be responsible for the write-up and dissemination of the results at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed journals. The Postdoctoral Research Associate would work closely with and receive mentorship from Dr. Tunik and an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and clinicians. Opportunities to mentor graduate and undergraduate students are available and encouraged. Dr. Tunik's previous trainees have an excellent record of achievement. The appointment is for one year with possibility of renewal, pending funding and performance.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the position will have a PhD or equivalent in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, computer science, mathematics, neuroscience, or psychology with emphasis on digital signal processing and hardware-software interfaces. The candidate must have strong computational skills and proficiency in programming (MATLAB, Python, or C++). Experience with the collection and analysis of kinematics, kinetics, EMG, or EEG in human subjects is strongly preferred. Experience in motor control / motor learning, neurophysiological signals, human behavioral experiments in healthy or pathological populations is also strongly preferred. Experience with non-invasive brain stimulation (TMS, tCS, tFUS) is highly valued, but not required. The candidate should be comfortable working both individually and as part of an interdisciplinary team, interacting healthy and clinical subject populations, and supervising students and technicians. This position is open to both US and non-US residents, though candidates should be competent with written and verbal scientific communications in English. Individuals from diverse backgrounds and those historically underrepresented in STEM are encouraged to apply.
