The University of Virginia School of Law seeks to hire a Director of Judicial Clerkships. This is a new, full-time position reporting to the Senior Director of Judicial Clerkships. The Office of Judicial Clerkships assists students and alumni in all aspects of the search for federal and state clerkships. The Office of Judicial Clerkships has an exceptional record of placing students in judicial clerkships and has achieved results that rank at the top of national law schools. UVA Law graduates have served as judicial clerks in every federal circuit in the country, as well as in foreign courts, courts of international jurisdiction and courts of special jurisdiction.

The Director will be expected to contribute to the office’s goal of continuous improvement.

Specific duties of this position include:

  • Counsel students and alumni on all aspects of the clerkship or judicial internship search process, including identifying target judges, researching chambers, formulating strategies for applications, preparing employment documents, preparing for interviews, and developing professional communication skills.
  • Work to cultivate and maintain relationships with judges.
  • Manage the development and implementation of programming designed to enhance student knowledge of types of clerkships and how to manage the clerkship search process.
  • Liaise with faculty and their assistants to ensure smooth production of letters of recommendation.
  • Work in conjunction with the other Career Development Office teams (Office of Private Practice and the Public Service Center) on joint projects, as well as on discreet projects as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school (or foreign equivalent).
  • Three years of legal experience, and familiarity with the federal judiciary.
  • Excellent interpersonal, project management, writing, and communication skills.
  • A positive and outgoing demeanor.
  • The ability to work diligently and efficiently in a fast-paced, detail-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency with standard office software.

Preferred Experience:

  • Judicial clerkship experience.
  • Additional experience as a practicing lawyer, in career counseling, or in a student services role in higher education.

This is a full-time University Executive Staff position with benefits.
