Job Summary:
The Director of Investments will be involved in all aspects of investment research, portfolio management, and endowment operations for the Furman University Endowment. As a generalist, the Director of Investments will cover all asset classes for the Furman University Endowment, but will have a primary emphasis on private capital strategies. The Director of Investments will also be involved in day-to-day management of the Furman University Endowment and will report to the Chief Investment Officer.

Responsibilities:

Works closely with the Chief Investment Officer to:
  • Implement decisions made by staff and the Investment Subcommittee.
  • Prepare comprehensive communications (monthly reports, quarterly meeting materials, project deliverables, etc.) for University officials, Investment Subcommittee members, other stakeholders as necessary.
  • Recommend asset allocation changes.


Drafts, prepares, and/or presents reports for CIO, Investment Subcommittee members, or other stakeholders as needed.

Monitors compliance with Furman's Investment Policy.

Source, underwrite and recommend prospective investment managers for addition to the portfolio. Also provide termination recommendations.

Monitor external investment managers and meet with them to discuss results, exposures and activity.

Build and maintain a pipeline of prospective investment managers by leveraging networks, consultants and databases.
  • Participate in the creation and development of an investment manager database to source, monitor and update relevant information.


Individual will be responsible for keeping apprised of industry trends and capital market research to ascertain the impact of market changes on the portfolio and external investment managers.

May be responsible for the development and implementation of quantitative tools to enhance the endowment's risk analysis and asset allocation processes.

Networks with investment professionals of similar sized endowments, foundations, family offices, pensions, consultants, etc. to attain information on investment strategy, asset allocation; best practices and prospective investment managers.
  • Helps expand Furman's brand in the investment community.
  • Attend industry conferences.


Supervises, mentors, and leads the Furman Investment Office Internship Program.

Become a voting member of the Retirement Plan Committee.

Prepares materials for and collaborates with CIO and Controller to complete annual audit.

Maintains effective relationship with the University's investment consulting firms, conducts periodic competitive processes for services.

Coordinates the Endowment Consulting Group meetings.

Participates in Ad Hoc committee work and performs other duties as assigned.

Pursues professional development opportunities.

Relationships/Responsibility for Final Decisions: Reports directly to Chief Investment Officer.

Daily contact with Chief Investment Officer. Frequent contact with University financial staff to plan, coordinate, problem solve, present information and make suggestions related to mutual goals.

Frequent contact with money managers; custodian bank; investment consultant; investment professionals for other endowments; and University Trustees.

Tasks involve interpretation of data and/or procedures to address opportunities or situations that are not clearly defined. Work involves non-routine/diverse work not defined by procedures.

Final decisions recommended to the Chief Investment Officer. Expect collaborative efforts with VP for Finance and Administration; the President; the Chair of the Investment Subcommittee; the Investment Subcommittee.

Qualifications/Education/Skill Requirements:

Self-motivated, self-directed and passion for learning, particularly about financial markets and investing.

Strong organizational, analytical & interpersonal skills - written & verbal.

Meticulous attention to detail.

High ethical and professional standards. High degree of humility.

Bachelors Degree with 5-10 years of experience in institutional asset management.

CFA, CAIA and/or MBA.

Experience in sourcing, underwriting and recommending along with a board network in private capital strategies is a plus.

Extensive knowledge of capital markets, investment strategies, and asset allocation.

Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required.

Experience using Evestment, Morningstar Direct, FactSet or similar software is a plus.

Ability to assert university's position in discussions with outside contacts.

Ability to present financial and non-financial information clearly and logically both in writing and orally.

Ability to review investment documents and knowledge of common legal terms and fee structures.

Team orientation and strong interest in supporting the work of a university endowment.

Work Conditions:

Work is performed in usual office conditions. Some travel required.
