Position Function:

The Assistant Vice President, Student Affairs is primarily responsible for enhancement of the student experience by creating a strong sense of belonging for all students at MSU. The AVPSA oversees transformative initiatives that help students feel welcomed, included, supported, valued, and engaged, these initiatives will be supported by an evidence-based assessment model. The AVPSA position includes oversight of several departments, including the Colvard Student Union & Event Services, Center for Student Activities, Student Leadership & Community Engagement, and Fraternity & Sorority Life. The position provides direct oversight of these offices as well as providing strategic leadership and collaboration with campus partners. The AVPSE is responsible for leading and evaluating services and activities related to student belonging, leadership development across the student population, and student engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Create and implement a plan for engagement and belonging that fosters a sense of belonging in all students at MSU. The plan must fit under the umbrella of the university’s Transformation Plan and the Student Affairs Strategic Plan, both of which are planned for deployment in 2023.
2. Serves as a senior administrator within the Division of Student Affairs; serves on the Division leadership team and represents the Division on various university committees as designated by the VPSA. The AVPSA is also responsible for working collaboratively with other members of the leadership team within the Division to fulfill the mission of Student Affairs and to help implement the division’s strategic plan.
3. Develops, coordinates, and assesses comprehensive student experience through activities and programs that are of educational, recreational, social, physical, and intellectual in nature that appeals to the diverse audience of the university student body. Regularly collaborates with partners in the Division of Access, Diversity, and Inclusion in program planning and implementation.
4. Designs and implements student organizational leader and advisor training, including details for student activities policies, procedures, budgetary matters, risk management, and other applicable university policies.
5. Develops, manages, and monitors operational budgets and fiscal reports. Performs periodic fiscal analysis of revenue and expenditures to ensure cost-effectiveness.
6. Use data to assess the effectiveness of academic and support initiatives and develop department and personnel goals that align with the university’s and departmental mission and goals.
7. Engage in University and community service by service on committees and collaborating with educational institutions and professional organizations for best practices; and actively participate in recruiting, enrollment, and retention events.
8. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education - Ph.D.; Ed.D. focused on Higher Education, Student Affairs Administration, or related field.
Experience - 8 years - Progressive student-services experience and service as Assistant/Associate Dean; previous supervision of professional staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

10 years of progressive work experience in student services-related and/or student affairs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Strong interpersonal skills; ability to build relationships and communicate with diverse constituency.
• Skilled in conflict management for problem resolution in amicable manner for all stakeholders.
• Ability to exhibit flexibility, willingness to learn, ability to adapt to change, and utilize current technology skills, while providing the highest level of service and response.
• Ability to manage confidentiality with the highest level of discretion.
• Ability to design, communicate, and implement regulations, codes, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
• Knowledge of student development and the issues facing college students such as underrepresented, first-generation, and income-needs persons in college and community.
• Knowledge of current issues facing higher education and student affairs including legal issues, risk management, diversity and inclusion, and student success.
• Excellent communication skills—oral, written, and group presentations.
• Knowledge and ability to work with diverse student populations.
• Knowledge and experience in student services-related technology and experience with student information systems.
• Experience in using assessment to inform decision making.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• Requires limited lifting of files and records and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
• Frequent- External imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis. Night, evening, and weekend work.
• Job frequently requires walking, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands.
