The Department of Film and Electronic Arts at California State University, Long Beach invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Screenwriting with expertise in film and television writing. Teaching screenwriting at “The Beach” means joining a dynamic and diverse media studies and production department that is engaged in an exciting curricular transformation. The successful candidate will play a central role in shaping the screenwriting curriculum to reflect the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion upon which our department is built.

Our department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Film and Electronic Arts with seven tracks of specialization, one of which is screenwriting. During 18 units of workshop-style courses, students learn the art of writing the feature film and television pilot, and have the option to continue studying comedy writing, adaptations, and the production and business of television. Our students are passionate about the art of screenwriting, and the successful candidate will have the capacity to meet their level of enthusiasm and inspire them to push past preconceived obstacles and produce their best work.

Required Qualifications:

• M.F.A. in Screenwriting or terminal degree in a related field. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the terminal degree by August 1, 2023.
• An emerging record of creative activity in screenwriting
• Two years of experience teaching feature screenwriting or writing for television courses at the college level
• Demonstrated commitment to developing and teaching an inclusive curriculum to a diverse student population, especially through intersectional approaches to gender, race, ethnicity, and class.
• Demonstrated potential for sustained growth and success in research, scholarly, and creative activities
• Experience with multiple modes of instruction (in-person, hybrid, online)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience teaching multiple forms of screenwriting (short and feature length film, episodic/serial television, web series, video games)
• An emerging record of screenwriting that reflects and elevates characters from underrepresented groups such as Feminist/Queer/Trans/LGBTQIA+; Black American/African/Diasporic; Latinx, Indigenous, AAPI; and/or differently abled communities
• An established record of mentoring young screenwriters (particularly from underrepresented groups)
• Specific knowledge of, and experience in, current industry screenwriting DEI initiatives
• Demonstrated expertise in developing effective online instruction

Duties:

• Teach introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses including, but not limited to, feature screenwriting and writing for television. [Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.]
• Develop and maintain ongoing research, scholarly, and creative activities leading to awards, presentations, and publications
• Collaborate with faculty to develop curriculum and coordinate/expand interdisciplinary collaborations and screening events with other departments on campus including study abroad initiatives
• Engage in outreach, student mentoring, and involvement in student activities
• Assist in identifying and recruiting part-time faculty
• Act as program liaison with professionals in the field
• Participate in service to the department, college, university, and local community

“Professional works” are defined as completed scripts that have won awards or honors at juried screenplay competitions; been optioned or produced by recognized professional production companies; been held as a staged reading by local or regional groups based on juried decision; been published in whole or in part; and/or selected for competitive writing residencies, led to writing fellowships, writing awards, or grants.

2) Statement of current and future creative or research plans (maximum 1 page, single-spaced)

• Two syllabi samples (to be submitted should you reach the finalist stage)
• Finalists should be prepared to submit an official transcript (e-transcript preferred, if available) and references will be contacted via phone or e-mail prior to any offer of employment.
