Warburg Chair in International Relations

Main Campus - Boston, MA
R09200

Simmons University invites applications for its Warburg Chair in International Relations to begin August 15, 2023 (start date negotiable). This is a two to three-year appointment as a faculty member within the Department of Political Science and International Relations.

Established in 1983 with the help of a generous grant from Joan Melber Warburg '45, widow of James P. Warburg, the Warburg Chair in International Relations brings to Simmons a distinguished practitioner who has had significant experience at a senior level in international relations. The Chair joins the interdisciplinary program in international relations, encompassing the fields of political science, economics, history, women's studies, and foreign languages, and sits on the steering committee of that program. Responsibilities include teaching two to three courses per year - generally a senior seminar and one or two subject-based electives in the Chair's area of interest. The Warburg Chair will also be responsible for coordinating discussion-oriented programs and meetings, mentoring students for careers in foreign policy, cultivating student opportunities, and bringing distinguished speakers to the Simmons community. Additionally, the Warburg Chair is expected to maintain a regular presence on campus as well as participate in activities that help advance the University's strategic goals.

We seek an innovative practitioner with an enthusiasm for the field who will contribute to the teaching excellence and instructional innovation of the department and the University. As a University committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, we seek candidates who embody and express these values and have proven experience successfully working with individuals across a broad spectrum of identities, beliefs, and perspectives.

The successful candidate will have a distinguished record as a senior practitioner in International Relations with experience in fields including, but not limited to: diplomacy, international trade, development, policy formulation and implementation, international organizations, international health, and/or international women's issues. Additionally, the successful candidate will have previous experience in foreign policy formulation (at a senior level) - preferably with familiarity with related US policies. Candidates need not have advanced academic qualifications in International Relations, Political Science or other disciplines.

Consideration of applications will begin March 10, 2023 and continue until the position is filled. To apply, please submit an online application including the following documents:

Curriculum Vitae

Letter of interest addressing the following:
  • Your interest in the position, including teaching undergraduates
  • Your experience as a mentor (preferably to students though any experience welcome)
  • Ideas for events you would host, or other ways of enhancing students' understanding of the field and current events

Instructions to Applicants: Please upload all applicable application materials (e.g. resume/cv, cover letter, writing sample, teaching philosophy, etc.) in the Application Materials box on page 2 ("My Experience") of this application. Documents can be uploaded individually or as a combined document (e.g. PDF).
