The Department of Musicology in the College of Music at the University of Colorado Boulder, invites applications for a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor for the 2023–2024 academic year, with the possibility of a second year’s renewal (2024-2025).

Who We Are

The Department of Musicology integrates studies in historical musicology and ethnomusicology in a single program of study (Ph.D.; B.A., B.M.). We are one of only two U.S. universities granting the Ph.D. in musicology between Kansas and California. For more information about our department, please visit our website .

Musicology is one of eleven departments in the College of Music, which offers graduate and undergraduate degree programs in the usual performance areas, composition, theory, and music education. The Boulder campus is located in one of the most picturesque and desirable geographic locations in the country, adjacent to the Denver metropolitan area and a short distance to the mighty Rocky Mountains.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Teaching two courses per semester (i.e., four per academic year), mentoring graduate students in departments across the College on their advisory committees, and service on College action committees as needed. Teaching duties will include undergraduate courses in the history of Western music (medieval to the present), a graduate course in the history of opera, and other courses suited to the expertise of the candidate, possibly including a doctoral seminar in your field of specialization.

The position is a fixed-term, non-tenure-track, at-will appointment, potentially renewable for a second year.

What We Can Offer
The salary range for this position will be $65,000 to $72,000 for a nine-month appointment. The position is eligible for participation in the University’s health, dental, and vision benefit plans. It is not eligible for paid vacation time or retirement benefits.

What We Require
  • Conferral of Ph.D. by August 15, 2023, and the doctorate must include training in historical studies in musicology.
  • At least one year of college-level teaching experience, which may be attained during graduate study.
