The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (“AUIS”) invites applications for the position of Vice President for University Advancement (“VPUA”), based in Washington, D.C. or other U.S. city.  The VPUA serves as the University’s chief fundraising and external relations officer.

AUIS is an independent, nonprofit, coeducational university founded in 2007 for the public benefit and located in Sulaimani, the cultural capital of the Kurdistan region in Iraq and a UNESCO-designated City of Literature.

The University’s expansive marble-and-glass campus has fifty classrooms, high-tech computer labs, library, auditoriums, dining facilities, and sports facilities. Our 1,400 students are taught in English, choosing among twenty-one majors that include Dentistry, Pharmacy, English, Engineering, IT, Business, and International Relations. Approximately 30% of full-time faculty are from the United States, another 30% from Iraq, and the balance from more than 20 other countries. The University’s acclaimed preparatory program is the only such program in Iraq to have earned U.S. accreditation (CEA). AUIS graduates are highly sought after by regional and international employers and have continued their studies at leading universities in the United States and Europe. POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Vice President for University Advancement will be primarily responsible for seeking support from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government. He or she will also play a central role in enhancing the visibility, institutional image, and public awareness of the University. The VPUA will report directly to the President, serve as the President’s advisor on all matters related to University advancement, and work closely with the University’s Board of Trustees, especially Board’s Advancement and External Relations Committee. The VPUA will be a visible and active representative of the University among all key stakeholder groups. This position requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills, as well as a deep understanding of fundraising, alumni engagement, and U.S.-style undergraduate education.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement an annual advancement and external relations plan, and assess results with the President and the Board of Trustees. Serve as Executive Director of the American University of Iraq Foundation, Inc., a Washington D.C.-based 501(c)(iii) organization focused on external relations and fundraising, reporting to the Foundation’s independent Board of Directors. Supervise U.S.-based grant application, management and reporting functions that support funding for University programs, students, faculty, and staff. Supervise the University’s Alumni Relations Office based in Sulaimani. Plan and implement outreach activities to enhance the opinion of the University and its role among key stakeholders and the public. Work closely with the University’s Communications Department on University communications with donors, partners, parents, and alumni. Assist in developing University strategic plans and in evaluating results.  Represent the University at events in the U.S. and other countries. Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

Desired Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be an energetic, collaborative, and proactive professional who fully understands and can persuasively communicate AUIS’s vision, mission, and challenges. He or she should also have:

  • At least three years of successful advancement experience with alumni and other constituencies in a not-for-profit institution, preferably a university, including experience with a fundraising campaign.  Experience with donor management, grant management, or other functions that require use of database systems and data-based analysis, especially in universities. Undergraduate degree from a U.S. university. Graduate degree preferred.   Residence in Washington, D.C., or other major U.S. city with excellent international air travel connections. Ability to travel in the U.S. and abroad, including to Washington, D.C., London, and Sulaimani for Board meetings and other events. U.S. citizenship and passport. Self-confidence, self-reliance, and self-motivation, given geographic separation from the University campus. Superb writing and speaking skills in English. Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work with groups. Living or working experience abroad, and the ability to speak two or more languages, are preferred.

Compensation:

The compensation package is competitive and based on skills and experience.
